This book/CD-ROM reference offers rules of comparison for various types of steel and steel standards. After an introduction to methods of comparing world steel standards, tables are arranged in a horizontal format, in sections on carbon and alloy steels for general use, structure steel plates, pressure vessel steel plates, steel tubes and pipes, forgings, castings, wrought stainless steels, and steels for special use. About 100 pages of appendices list standards from various organizations.

There are no tidy equivalent steel standards, warns metallurgist and engineer Bringas, but he has done what he could to precipitate from the chaos a set of rules of comparison that he applies as well as possible throughout, and explains in the first chapter. Each chart is tagged to show which set of criteria it uses. The types of steel compared are carbon and alloy steels for general use, structural and pressure-vessel plates, tubes and pipes, forgings, castings, wrought stainless, and steels for special use such as springs and tools.
