Sunny Side Down is more a collection of comics than a narrative memoir, but Lev's observations about growing up and relationships are staggeringly accurate, precise, and personal but really, is it possible that we've all had the gas station argument? . They're very tongue in cheek and representative of how many people probably feel already. It's down to earth and sometimes a little dark and always pessimistic.

Lev is just like any other young, urban sub-professional who sees the world through inch-thick goggles of self-consciousness

Lev is just like any other young, urban sub-professional who sees the world through inch-thick goggles of self-consciousness. Armed only with insecurity, doubt, and a seemingly inadvisable tenacity, Lev trudges through his days furiously analyzing himself and the world around him, desperately trying to figure out where he fits in. If you have ever felt like a perpetual square peg in a world of round holes, you have found a kindred spirit.

If the stories, anecdotes, and reflections contained in Sunny Side Down are to be taken as fact, then Yilmaz is definitely not a jock. He wasn't the popular guy in high school

Popularized by his animated shorts called Tales of Mere Existence, Yilmaz has become somewhat of an icon to the perpetually frustrated, the heartbroken, and office workers who count down the hours before quitting time.

A Web Original series by Lev Yilmaz. The eponymous "tales" in the series are brief reflections on Lev's life or even statements about life in general using anecdotes to give examples. The videos in this series consist of multiple still images in the process of being drawn by Lev (which can be as simplistic as a stick figure or as complex as a portrait of Clint Eastwood), narrated in a very dry, monotone voice.

If you watch Levs videos and like them, get this.

It's good for a reread as well since there's so much in it. I would have loved to have this as a teenager. If you know any teens this makes the perfect gift if you can convince then to read. Maybe show them a few of Lev's videos first.

Watch some of Mr. Yilmaz's videos online. If you even like one, this book is a must have.

To be honest, it's more of a graphic commentary on life than anything else. You will be able to relate to at least 2/3 of this book in it's astute depictions of childhood, relationships, the working world, and motivations and lack thereof.

Buy it.

Up until about Chapter 5 you are reading more of a youth-inspired comic strip. I found it more difficult to relate to the young Lev, because apparently I do not have as vivid of a memory about my childhood as others.

From Chapter 5 on, I had several good laughs and a lot of chortles. Some of the content is reused from his youtube channel; I missed his presentation with the live-action drawing and the narration. However, it was nice to see one of my favorites (How To Break Up With Your Girlfriend in 64 easy steps).

The new content has some real gems. It was a quick read, only taking a few sittings. If you know Lev through his youtube videos, you might miss the live presentation that you have come to know online as I did. Overall, no regrets.

Lev's videos are priceless and instantly recognizable, and at first there may be the concern that his work won't translate the same in comic form. However, that concern quickly goes away as he takes greater liberty in his book to cover more variations on a single theme, allowing a richer and more comprehensive understanding of Lev's strange thought process.

From hilarious analyses of schoolyard archetypes to situations that strike chords with everyone who wasn't mr. or mrs. popular, Sunny Side Down brilliantly captures the (now laughable) issues that we grappled with in our youth. Lev's personal and intimate style helps the comics to feel as close to one's own thoughts as possible, resulting in a connection both funny and touching. A great read!

Anyone who appreciates the satirical pessimism of Matt Groening's 'Life in Hell' will enjoy these semi-autobiographical tales from YouTube star Lev Yilmaz.

Lev Yilmaz's comics are funny because of how sad they are. They all portray him in a negative light but in such a way that makes you laugh, even if you can relate to the characters on the page. If you liked Matt Groening's 'Life in Hell' you will love this book.

Well, while I really enjoyed the book, I felt its depressive nature especially towards the end. It's a funny book at a first look, but in fact it's meant to show you the usual human life cycle which never goes as expected. The cover art suggests that too. 5 stars for putting facts in such a funny manner. It's so fun you'll get depressed.

As for the book quality, it is kind of unique, Lev did a good job giving it an "old feeling" with his art style and especially the typewriter text.
It was fantastic. It arrived on time and the condition was excellent. Plus, the book is hilarious.
