Here, in a marvellously gripping and rewarding novel, is the story of the tycoons who created and built the motion picture industry- not in Hollywood but in New York City at the turn of the century. In particular, it is the story of Max Britsky- born in the East Side ghetto of New York, penniless- and of his struggle to survive and to conquer the world he had entered. It is also the story of the woman he married, of love and hate, of fraud and financial piracy and infighting, of loyalty and betrayal. In other words, it is just the kind of tale you would expect from one of the master story tellers of our time. It is not a book to be put down easily. Once you enter the world of New York at the turn of the century, the world of Rectors and Delmonico's and Boss Murphy of Tammany Hall and Monk Eastman, that king of hoodlums, you will partake of a wonderfully rewarding feast. And you will welcome Max Britsky into the world of literary immortals. Like Dan Lavette of San Francisco, the hero of Howard Fast's The Immigrants, Max Britsky is a man for all seasons, and you will live with him, laugh with him, and weep with him.

If you like historical fiction this is a great fast moving book about a young German without parents coming to America to be with relatives successfully making their way to wealth in America through hard work and talent. The characters are extremely well drawn and the interaction is wonderful. You won't be able to put it down. Makes you understand why the past generations of immigrants made a strong America unlike what I am afraid we are turning out in our children these days.

This is an excellent novel by the controversial and prolific writer, Howard Fast. Fast suffered for years under the shadow of being blacklisted during the McCarthy era, but never gave up on his writing career. He wrote mystery novels under a pen name and eventually produced the highly popular "Immigrant" series of novels.

MAX was written when Fast was 68 years old, which should be an inspiration to all of us aging writers. Its a business novel set in the earl days of the motion picture industry that stretches from the age of nickelodeons to the arrival of movies with sound. The main character is a poor boy who fights his way to the top in a life filled with love, friendship and betrayal. While not strictly a historical novel, the book is peppered with factual information regarding the era and, as in most of Fast's books, reflects an intelligent historical awareness. Overall, this is a really fun, satisfying read.
