Billy: Messenger of Powers is a fascinating, fun read. It kept me captivated, in suspense, and laughing  . These Powers (what you or I would call witches or warlocks) have divided into two camps: the Dawnwalkers, dedicated to the protection of humanity and the secrecy of the world of the Powers; and the Darksiders, who want nothing more or less than complete control of the world and the enslavement of all humanity. At the same time, he shouted, Are you nuts? Billy’s outburst, and so even Billy’s small frame was enough to knock her down. They hit the craggy rock of the cliff top with a bone-jarring thud, and Billy felt his breath jerk loose from his lungs in a whoosh. Fulgora was on her feet almost instantly, shoving Billy to one side and breathing like a wounded rhino. She wasn’t hurt, he could see at a glance

Billy wondered if that included everything, including that one time he had picked his nose during class in first grade . A great many things, she said. I need to go to Powers Island, and I think I might need Billy while I’m there. But I don’t want to take him to the Council with m. ot right away.

Billy wondered if that included everything, including that one time he had picked his nose during class in first grade and everyone saw him doing it and made fun of him. Then he tore his thought away from that embarrassing moment. There were more important things happening right now, he knew, even if he didn’t understand exactly what they were. So what does a blank page on the Book of Earth mean? he asked. And I don’t want him left alone on the island, either, s.

Billy: Messenger of Powers. Billy Jones by. Michaelbrent Collings (Goodreads Author).

"BILLY WAS ONLY FOURTEEN YEARS OLD THE FIRST TIME HE DIED."And with those words the saga of Billy Jones begins with BILLY: MESSENGER OF POWERS. Billy, like many of us, leads what he believes is a fairly normal life: trying to get through school, trying to deal with his first crush, and trying to avoid the bullies who seem intent on trying to prove he can be flushed down a toilet. But all that changes (or at least some of it) when Billy discovers that Powers walk among us. For years the Darksiders and Dawnwalkers have lived in a state of uneasy truce: ever since the last War of the Powers, when the evil Darksider Wolfen was defeated and banished, cast out of the world of the Powers and ordered never to return. But now there are whispers. There are stirrings. Portents.Wolfen has returned. The Darksiders are on the rise. And Billy is the only one who can save the world.

This was a bedtime story read that took us a few months to get through. I was reading to a 6-year-old with an above his age level ability to listen to chapter books, but, an age level ability to keep his eyes open much past bedtime. Still there were many nights when we stretched our limits to find out what happened next.

This book is a great adventure about a misfit boy who is made of stronger stuff than even he is aware. This is another story that takes the concept of a magic world, separate, but, connected to our own. I understand that there will be comparisons to other tales along that line, but, this was unique enough to keep us guessing. The writing is intelligent and descriptive, yet, the author has bits of whimsical fun peppering the rather intense tale. Collings' ability to write a battle scene had me holding my breath at times, which is difficult when reading aloud. I felt as if we were being whisked from one unexpected place to another on a magic carpet ride. I found myself scouring the internet when we were close to the end to find any news of a sequel. We are very impatiently waiting for a sequel. Tap...tap...tap...
Small Black
I think this is a great book for kids, although in a younger age group. The main character is fourteen years old, and he is still immature for his age, so comes across as a little whiny in places. Having said that, he is a weak kid, bullied at school, then suddenly gets thrust into a world of magic and powers, is it any wonder he cries now and then!

I liked the mix of characters, and thought the writing style was excellent. I think having the character ask for things confirmed is a great way to ensure the younger reader is following along, although older readers may feel a little talked down to. I think the story line was quite complex for kids, so all in all I thought this was a positive. There is suspense and tension and some thrilling fight scenes, enough to keep older readers enthralled, without giving the younger ones nightmares.

I do, however, see many a bedtime story over-running, as the kids beg for more, lots of exciting chapter ends that mean you have have to begin the next.

Collings stays true to his action and excitement writing roots, and here delivers for kids. Billy starts high school low on the food chain, immediately making enemies of bigger and cooler kids, but things turn around when he sees -- of all things -- a talking frog. Soon he discovers that he is no ordinary kid, but maybe someone with great magical powers, maybe a herald-prophet whose appearance on the scene is to start the war among the Powers, and certainly a kid in whom lots of dangerous people and creatures suddenly take an interest. Billy faces off against dragons, comet-riding scorpions, zombies, and bigger, older kids... with evil magic powers... as he struggles to survive his testing and find out if he is indeed the precursor to the return of the White King.

Great for middle readers and young YA readers (aged 7 to 14, I'd say). Action, fantasy, go!

I really enjoyed reading this book and I am hoping that there is another one soon to follow. The story was one that any person with a big imagination would enjoy. There are twist and turns. As you read your not sure what will happen, but when you reach certain parts you think to yourself "I should have known that was coming!! Why didn't I see it?!"

However, I must say that this book was very poorly edited. There were quite a few grammer errors that at times caused me to stop because I was unsure of what a sentence would mean.

While some reviewers disparage any comparisons to Harry Potter, I believe them to be incorrect. This book should also be judged on its own merits. It is an exciting adventure with sufficient twists and tensions to keep the reader enthralled. Between climaxes, the author allows the reader enough backstory to understand the plot. While their are common themes such as the protagonist being an underdog and relentlessly bullied by the cool kids, it does not become cliche.

If you are a kid or kid at heart, this book rocks!

I got this when it was free on Amazon.com, and I am so glad I did. After I read this in a day, I immediately went looking for the sequel Billy: Seeker of Powers and bought it. (And I read and loved it - highly recommended by the way) I wasn't sure what to expect with a character named Billy, but it went above and beyond my expectations. The mystery surrounding Billy identity/role is intriguing, and he really grows as a character. The plot draws you in once things get going (and that doesn't take long). The supporting characters are instantly likeable. And the book is quite funny! Perhaps it was sleep deprivation, but I definitely laughed out loud at certain points in the book. Couldn't put the book down. Highly recommend this to all those who like scifi/fantasy!

Lately I've taken to reading lots of books with adolescent protagonists, the Hunger Games trilogy, the Ember series and the Underland Chronicles. While lacking some of the depth of the Hunger Games books, this one was very enjoyable. I agree with another reviewer that Billy's obtuseness can be annoying at times, and I'd like to see him grow more from the first page to the last of the sequels that are sure to follow (and which I'll surely purchase). Still, there is charm and an underlying optimism in the book that I appreciate.
