With Swords Against Wizardry,, the story unfolds behind the curtain in the Witch’s Tent. Fafhrd and Gray Mouser are there to consult a sorceress who holds the secret to their escape, but when would they ever need to escape? Would they need this knowledge when they journey to Stardock? Where is there to escape up there? No doubt the icy seduction of the cruel one, with her greed for both gore and graciousness, could offer them several ways out. Their luck has been good so far; one way out should work. Their luck continues as thieves.

I was not wily enough to escape being snared, yet again, by the incomparable Mr. Leiber. The fourth volume of collected tales of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser is every bit as enjoyable and worthy a read as the three that precede it. While I prefer the shorter stories concerning Leiber's well-known characters, his longer works involving the famous pair are also quite sound. In this book, "Stardock" and "The Lords of Quarmall" take up the bulk of the text. Fine stories, but due to their length, they lack some of the wit and pacing of stories like "The Price of Pain-Ease" and "Bazaar of the Bizarre" (from "Swords Against Death").

That being said, there are some tasty passages from both of those longer works in the volume under review here. This one from "Stardock" always makes me grin:
"Hrissa crouched on his chest and gazed down into his face with an expression the next levin-glare showed to be sad yet critical, as if to ask, “Where is this vaunted human ingenuity?”

And of course, who could forget how Leiber described the Mouser's reimagining that Fafhrd was right about weight during a mountain climb?
"Midmorning and they were still climbing without a break. The Mouser ached or stung in every part. His pack was like a fat man on his back, Scalpel a sizable boy clinging to his belt. And his ears had popped five times."

"The Lords of Quarmall" has more serious overtones:
"He clung to existence solely by the thread of his great hatred for his brother, all else of life was to him less than a shadow-show; yet his hate held for him all of life’s wonder and sweetness and high excitement—it was enough."
Even with that heavy, borderline morbid tone playing through most of the story, the ending of the tale, as well as it's climax and several smaller scenes during the build-up, are very light. In fact, those scenes contain more than enough levity to dispel any notion that Leiber is writing opera (though the man's way with prose is nothing short of GENIUS that approximates art).

In short: do you like Leiber? Read it. Do you like fantasy? Read it. Do you enjoy quality writing that tells an imaginative story with likable characters that will leave you feeling like you had fun reading a book? READ IT. ...then, leave a review. ;-)

This isn't Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser's peak -- that may have been one of the first three volumes of their adventures -- but it's another solid entry and includes a long novella set in the underground city-labyrinth of Quarmall that can stand up to any setting in fantasy.

Definitely worth a read for lovers of fantasy fiction.

FRitz Leiber's wrote the Fafrd and the Gray Mouser series about 50 years ago. They are classics of fantasy literature and started many of the tropes we see in fantasty today. Definitely, worth a read if you have never tried them.

My problem was with the use of words. There were way to many words a I could hardly pronounce let alone have any idea what they meant.
Fritz Leiber was a master of Sword and Sorcery/adventure fiction. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are two of the best characters ever to walk across the pages of an adventure and into our imaginations. This book collects a couple of their tales. My only complaint is it was too short. As someone who has climbed mountains for fun, I can say that Mr. Leiber brought the memories of those trips back to me with his gripping descriptions of the climb up the Stardock Mountain.

But that's the thing about Mr. Leiber. He combines a brilliant imagination with perfectly detailed descriptions (not too much, not too little) that captures these adventures with exquisite detail. He makes it look easy. The mark of a true master.

Wait, I have one more complaint. With all the dross that is turned into movies and TV shows, why are Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser not adventuring onscreen? Oh, that's a crime.

Anyway, if you enjoy this kind of fiction, you won't be disappointed. And if you have Kindle Unlimited, as I do, it's free. Can't beat that price.
