Nene Janet Paterson Clutha ONZ CBE (28 August 1924 – 29 January 2004) was a New Zealand author who published under the name Janet Frame. She wrote novels, short stories, poetry, juvenile fiction, and an autobiography. Frame's celebrity derived from her dramatic personal history as well as her literary career.

Janet Frame spent several years in psychiatric institutions. Originally published in three separate volumes: To the Is-Land first published in 1982. This is the second volume in Janet Frame's autobiography, in which she tells of how she left the close-knit family home in Oamaru for teacher training college in Dunedin. I’m amazed by how much Janet Frame packs into her books: most people with lives this eventful would have let the story sprawl to nearly 400 pages, but here in fewer than 200 she captures the years when she was roughly aged 18 to 31 – eight of which were spent off and on in mental hospitals.

Since her autobiography was written in three separate volumes, we are treated to a film in three separate parts, beginning with her journey through childhood. The film does an excellent job at portraying the character of Frame, and her nervous attitude when brought into social situations. When I raise this film up to other biography based films, there isn't one that compares.
