Foster, Alan Dean - Commonwealth 27 - Humanx 06 - Cachalot (v. ). Mustapha had lived all his long life on Cachalot, and those who are born to that world know less of seasickness than a worm does of Andromeda.

There was nothing any save an outsider would have found remarkable in this. All born on Cachalot rest in two cradles: their nursery, and the greater nursery of the all-encompassing Mother Ocean.

Cachalot (1980) is a science fiction novel by American writer Alan Dean Foster. Cachalot is an ocean planet where humans have begun building floating cities. It is also the same planet where all of Earth’s cetaceans were transplanted six hundred years ago after the Covenant of Peace was enacted with all d ocean dwellers. Four of these cities have been destroyed when a middle-aged scientist and her late-teen daughter are dispatched to the planet to discover the source of the attacks.

Alan Dean Foster, (perhaps because of his film degree?) writes such vividly colorful, easily visualized places and people. This is one of the most beautiful planets in his SF universe. It is a world of all water, all ocean. It was given over to the remaining whales and dolphins of Earth, in an attempt at recompense for their near extinction. Shortly before they were all gone, it was discovered that they had all been more or less sentient all along, which made this near-genocid I love this book.

After receiving Bachelor's and Master's degrees at UCLA, he spent two years as a copywriter for a small Studio City, California PR firm. His writing career began in 1968 when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of Foster's and published it as a short story. More sales of short fiction followed. His first attempt at a novel, The Tar-Aiym Krang, was published by Ballantine Books in 1972.

Minor rub marks on the spine seam, tanning to the page edges unusual setting, a brief appearance of Flinx, freaky ending. most def a winner amongst the commonwealth series, probably the best stand-alone aside from Midworld (Bloodhype was priceless but I count that as a flinx tale). 0. Cachalot - landless ocean planet, long ago reserved by man as a refuge for the great sea-creatures they had hunted near to extinction. Scattered humans lived peacefully in floating townships, until one day something rose from the deep destroying all in its path.

After the first chapter or two reading "Cachalot" I didn't think I was going to like it. After a little more reading I realized I had been hooked and didn't know it. Cachalot is a planet covered 99% by oceans and the humans that live on floating cities and only a couple of land cities are being destroyed by something. The scientists adventure to find out the truth about why or what is destroying these cities. The adventure is personal enough with the crews interactions to be interesting, and with banter between the scientists and the cetaceans, and the deep sea peril keeps the story adventurous enough to keep you entertained. A fun read.

I'm biased when it comes to Alan Dean Foster. He was the first author I ever fell in love with. Cachalot was a another winner in my book. It had action, thrills, a little romance and suspense. I'm normally very good at predicting storylines, be it movie or book, but Cachalot kept me guessing. The ending totally caught me off guard. This is a book I'll read again and save for my kids to read when they get older.

Readable, interesting and imaginative.

Thought experiments are wonderful. This one captures the genuine feel of "otherness" that I think is a trademark of good sci-fi. Combined with a clear depiction of how this "otherness"! affects persons, and the way they interact. The attempt to portray the personality of whales, as something decidedly not human, but none the less clearly true personalities is great.

Entertaining book, fun reading. Alan Dean Foster wrote this book with lots of imagination - vivid descriptions and a good plot.
Great futuristic sci-fi! I love Fosters work as well as a storyline that is easy to follow. It is worth a second read on a snowy night in Syracuse!!
