We had us a good Conestoga wagon and six head of cattle, good big oxen, to haul it. We had two horses and two saddles, and inside the wagon was Pap’s tools, our grub, bedding, and a few odds and ends like Ma’s picture, which Pap kept by him, no matter what. Pap had swapped for a couple of Joslyn breech-loading carbines before we left Kansas, and we each had us a handgun, Shawk & McLanahan six-shooters, caliber. 36, and good guns, too.

Rye Tyler was twelve when his father was killed in an Indian raid. This book belongs, not just in the "Great Western Novel" category, but in the "Great Novel" category.

One of my favorite Louis L'amore novels. It was similar to some of his other stories, but this one was especially good. I liked the characters and that it covered a lot of territory from St. Louis to California, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and New Orleans. Only negative was that maybe ending was a bit abrupt, but overall a classic western.

I flew through this exciting book. It has an old fashioned style with a spare, almost stark, delivery approaching poetry. The descriptions of the rugged western land of the early settlers is amazing. The plot is tough high tension, a bit overblown but very, very exciting and just true entertainment with heart and history. I absolutely love reading L'Amour's books.

This was a good western that moved along at a fast pace. My only complaint was when Rye Tyler's Henry rifle magically changed to a Winchester after a couple of chapters. But it didn't distract from the story so no harm no foul. As usual the character realistic men and women. There is a plot twist to the story, but you can see it coming if you pay attention. Louis L'Amour just make it so easy to enjoy a story. So saddle up and take a ride.

Louis L'Amour is still the best in Western writing for balanced story-line, descriptive powers, basic humanity and believable outcomes. 'To Tame a Land' is no exception, the one doubt in the story being the capabilities of the hero while still a young twenty-something in taming a whole lawless community. However, the author sustains a gripping narrative, a tested romance that titillates the reader and a satisfying sense of justice served when all is over. Louis L'Amour rarely disappoints in the quality of the story and his leading characters, along with his powers of description of the physical and human landscapes. He transports his readers easily into the real world of the old West.

To Tame A Land is a fast paced story about a boy named Rye who is forced to grow up after he is orphaned in Indian Territory. He learns to live off the land, hunt, break horses, run cattle, earn respect, and kill when necessary. Problem is, if you're too good with a gun, killers looking to make a name for themselves come for you.

The writing style is full of old west slang and the descriptions of the environments are brief and near perfect. It pulls you into the story. The pivotal scenes of this book are well written and the scenes that link them are brief to keep up the pace. Although this book is154 pages, it's got a bit of everything: friendship, wisdom, action, one liners, and love. It's a great read for anyone who wants a taste of action in the old west.

I have been reading Louis Lamour westerns since 1970, I have had all of them, I really enjoy reading the ones I used too have, before they became unreadable. I have had at least 50 of his books and have read them all at least 20 times
Another Louis L'Amour great and I enjoyed every page. The more I read, the more I understand why my dad enjoyed reading him so much.
