Heart of Darkness is a powerful indictment of the evils of imperialism. Joseph Conrad (originally Józef Teodor Konrad Nalecz Korzeniowski) was born in the Ukraine in 1857 and grew up under Tsarist autocracy. Pub date: 29 August 2011. Imprint: Penguin Press. His parents, ardent Polish patriots, died when he was a child, following their exile for anti-Russian activities, and he came under the protection of his tradition-conscious uncle, Thaddeus Bobrowski, who watched over him for the next twenty-five years.

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-English novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Charles Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames. Joseph Conrad is one of the greatest English writers, and Heart of Darkness is considered his best. His readers are brought to face our psychological selves to answer, ‘Who is the true savage?’
Heart of Darkness" can either be read as an adventure story of a young man's exploits in a foreign mysterious continent or a physiological thriller of another . As for Heart of Darkness, this is, in my opinion Conrad's best work.
Heart of Darkness" can either be read as an adventure story of a young man's exploits in a foreign mysterious continent or a physiological thriller of another man's descent into madness. The majority of the story is told by a seaman as he sits aboard a yawl moored in the river Thames. The foundation of the novella is an European employer has hired Marlow to find rogue ivory trader Mr Kurtz who has absconded into the jungle with the company's money and ivory. If you've never read Conrad this is a perfect place to start, although it does set the bar pretty high. The story is intense and beautifully read.

Joseph Conrad’s Life and Travels. Some of the inspiration for Heart of Darkness came from the author’s experiences at sea and on the Congo River. While the biographical episodes from Conrad’s early days lend authenticity to the descriptions of piloting the steamer, his memories of his experience in the Congo may have shaped the story he tells of Marlow’s trip up the mighty river.
Heart of Darkness grew out of a journey Joseph Conrad took up the Congo River; the verisimilitude that the great novelist thereby brought to his most famous tale everywhere enhances its dense and shattering power. Apparently a sailor’s yarn, it is in fact a grim parody of the adventure story, in which the narrator, Marlow, travels deep into the heart of the Congo where he encounters the crazed idealist Kurtz and discovers that the relative values of the civilized and the primitive are not what they seem.
