Bernice Rubens (26 July 1923 – 13 October 2004) was a Booker Prize-winning Welsh novelist. Her father, Eli Rubens, was a Lithuanian Jew who, at the age of 16, left mainland Europe in 1900 in the hope of starting a new life in New York City. Due to being swindled by a ticket tout, Rubens never reached America, his passage taking him no further than Cardiff.

This book is a study on human nature. We have the perp. in prison and what that does to a person,, we have his wife visiting and all the varying emotions that accompany that, we have a fellow visitor she meets who exhibits up and down emotions that range from drunkenness to sorrow. The reason the perp. is in prison is the basis for the story and full of varying emotions. A good story.

for the women in the story to gain some self esteem and self awareness -- to think themselves important enough to exist without a man, especially a deranged man. But neither did. We learn the reason for the main character's killing, but it never really ties together why his feelings toward the entire profession of psychotherapy is as intense as it is. Obviously, he has psychological issues, but no one in the story ever seems to notice. Also, Donald didn't seem especially intelligent, yet he was able to commit murder numerous times, without leaving any evidence. Seemed like a good story when I started reading, but ended up a big let down. Glad it was a bargain book.

This is undoubtedly one of the strangest novels I have read in some time. The murderer leads you through all of his killings and when he is not doing that, his wife fills in from her side. Both are very likeable. I found myself chuckling to myself countless times and thoroughly enjoying the writing style. Bravo!

I was surprised to find out this was written in the ?60's? Enjoyed the book but wouldn't read it again.

telling the story from the murder's, wife's and detective's point of view made it more interesting that just telling the story.

I had not read books by this author, but did enjoy it. I usually give 4 starts to a book I would recommend.
I thought the story was bland and a little weird. I thought it would be cute, but I guess it just isn't my kind of story.
