The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (and the sequel, The Return) are probably Nobbs' most successful This was David Nobbs' breakthrough novel, written in his late thirties, six years after the flurry of his first three. Those first three were bleakly absurdist in the tradition of the Goon Show, Beckett, Ionesco, with hints of Monty Python in them, but through the three of them there's a progression from straightforwardly absurdist alienation to a more recognizably human set of relationships. The obituary mentioned the 4 book he wrote about Reginald Perrin and how each book got a BBC television treatment and how witty and satirical they are.

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin is a novel and British sitcom starring Leonard Rossiter in the title role. Both the book and TV series were written by David Nobbs, and the screenplay for the first series was adapted by Nobbs from the novel. I didn't get where I am today without knowing a favourable report when I read on. I didn't get where I am today without knowing a real winner when I see on.

We are treated to two visits to the cup final between Climsworth and Stafford. Had the scores been different in each one we might have though that it was - Reggie in Grot mode designing a useless book. Since the scores in both versions are the same we must put it down to a fault on the part of Kindle which fortunately did not render the book completely useless though it didn't do it any favours. A tour de force by Mr Nobbs.

Most enjoyable, I could visualize the characters from the tv series from the distant past which made it that much more fun. recommended

My public television station was ahead of its time in bringing British comedy to viewers and I remember the BBC version of these books very fondly back in the early 70s. I didn't realize back then that they were based on books, but knowing the BBC I'm sure the TV episodes were faithful reproductions and I look forward to reading these, if only for the sake of being able to understand everything said: Leonard Rossiter was hilarious but his delivery is so quick my young American ears couldn't always keep up.
