Small Pleasures is a definite page turner! I thought the subject matter was difficult to read at times, but I was rooting for Mya and her family throughout the book. Kudos for Miss Bolden. The author has a special way with words. I thought that she wrote lyrically. I enjoyed ready her words as much as reading the story. especially after investing so much into the story. I thought it was well written and the characters definitely came alive. I could imagine the yard and the tree where the girls would go to eat figs and get away from all the madness that was part.

All and all a book to make you think about abuse, love, and relationships with friends, family and lovers!
X-MEN
The author had a lot to say and what was said was on point. There were a few errors but those did not take away from the message and the writing style.

This story is about love and how we use love, twist it and manipulate it and the people we choose to give it too. It is also about perception, abuse and taking responsibility. Small Pleasures is about a father trying to raise daughters in a world which he knows is cruel but at the same time he's incapable to properly disciplining them while coexhisting with his wife (their mother). It is about self destructive behavior (when the main character Mya begins cutting her skin, her hair anything to make her less attractive) and suicide, the older sister eventually takes her own life. And these are things that aren't supposed to happen in black communities, so ther author implies in the story.

Excellent story about life in general, the ups and downs, the love and hate.

This wonderfully written story is about the hidden secrets that reside in this family that are left untold. The disturbing abuse manifests in deadly ways, killing bodies, minds, and spirits. What's left of these pieces are woven together to create the story of how Mya survived.

The mother tries to cover her own abuse, there is the burden of trying to be perfect in a world where perfection exists only as its own. Then, there is the danger of "small pleasures" and what a human being can lend their lives to.

Mya's Story will not disappoint you! It will make you laugh, cry, and wonder why? Or should I say who?

Intense sexual theme, storyline is centered around the main character Mya. She comes from a tradional home with three other sisters. The mother is a stay at home mom who takes care of everyone and their father is busy destroying himself but in the process destroys the intellect, self-esteem and beauty of his four daughters. Small Pleasures is a complex novel because its a slice of life story about love hate sex betrayal . . . all those things that make up life.

I was more than eager to read this authors first novel as I have been a fan of her work in short stories and poetry for a while. I was not disappointed. The words don't shoot off the page in any hurry but seem to take their time, languidly effecting a southern pace. One that's not too fast or not too slow but just right to get the point across as effectively as desired. A tale about four sisters so vividly disturbing at times, you will wince as you read it, and at times so funny as to elicit out loud laughter. The characters are full and complex but always familiar, and the story takes you where it wants to as you find yourself a more than willing passenger on that ride. Kudos for Miss Bolden. I await her return.
