The Rover is a classic Restoration comedy by the first English woman playwright. Arriving in Naples at carnival time, a group of exiled cavaliers determine to enjoy themselves. They are repeatedly tempted and tricked by various prostitutes and their pimps, until their leader, the Rover, is finally forced to give up his wild behaviour when he falls in love with a single-minded, wealthy virgin. Carnival is the background for one of Aphra Behn's best known plays. Behn's obvious will to display men's behavioral 'liberties' towards her sex cannot be ignored and must inevitably give the play its second dimension : The Rover isn't only a comedy, it is also a satire. Behn is saying through her work - not for the first time, since this is sort of what she does - what women of her epoch could only formulate in thoughts.

This proto-feminist, part-time spy (I kid you not--for King Charles II) playwright is as good as William Wycherley and other restoration comedians--she was only recently re-discovered (1980's, I believe) because of sexist publishers and an all-male literary canon. Brilliant and insightful, she points out beautifully the inequality and hypocrisy of patriarchal culture. It's also just a heck of a lot of fun!

Virginia Woolf said that all women together should let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn - for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds - well, within the Rover, her sexual politics are personified through the character of Angelica Bianca : and it makes for an intriguing read! Brandishing swords, embracing rape and finding their own individual identities in a society that veiwed women as second class subject, this remained the most frequently performed play right up until 1800!
