Beaumont's play should appeal to the casual fan of Shakespeare with its gentle satires of moments in Hamlet, Romeo .

Beaumont's play should appeal to the casual fan of Shakespeare with its gentle satires of moments in Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth (all identified in the footnotes, but often readily apparent), but perhaps the most commonly referenced scenic comparison is to King Henry IV, Part Two, from which Zitner tells us Samuel Taylor Coleridge considered a passage in this. This is The One, folks! Absolutely wonderful and very thorough Introduction, which made me feel I was finally getting a grasp on the fact that the play didn't quite appear out of nowhere.

The Knight of the Burning Pestle is a play in five acts by Francis Beaumont, first performed at Blackfriars Theatre in 1607 and published in a quarto in 1613. It is the earliest whole parody (or pastiche) play in English. The play is a satire on chivalric romances in general, similar to Don Quixote, and a parody of Thomas Heywood's The Four Prentices of London and Thomas Dekker's The Shoemaker's Holiday. It breaks the fourth wall from its outset.

This play is a celebration of London life and theatre in which Francis Beaumont's comic genius is given free rein. The introduction analyses the character of Beaumont's wit and his unsentimental critique of society and of society's stage image

This play is a celebration of London life and theatre in which Francis Beaumont's comic genius is given free rein. A grocer, his wife and their two apprentices attending the theatre in holiday mood interrupt and finally replace a fatuous love comedy with their own heart's desire: exotic spectacle and sound English sentiment. The introduction analyses the character of Beaumont's wit and his unsentimental critique of society and of society's stage image. It also places The Knight in the contexts of Jacobean comedy and the work of the children's theatrical troupes.

Had to read it for a British Renaissance Literature Class. Not a bad book and quite entertaining, but definitely one of those books I wouldn't have found on my own.

I would put it at a mixture between Shakespeare and Chaucer for those looking to read it.

It's a pretty good play but don't bother with this edition. Someone seems to have scanned a library copy and uploaded it to the Kindle system without cleaning it up at all. The scan was just terrible. So you get page headers in the middle of the text, interrupting reading on every page. Lines are broken at arbitrary places. Page numbers randomly inserted into the text. There are lots of typos where the OCR got things wrong. Generally, not readable, much less enjoyable. Example (chosen from a random page)

This was a book I needed for a class - it has some funny moments, but on the whole "not my cup of tea"

This book is on the required reading list for my English Renaissance class I am taking for this semester. Amazon is the best place to order books from.

Tracie O'Keefe and Katrina Fox tell it like it is. They say that there is no such thing as a sex-change. Transsexuals change their bodies to align with their minds and spirits. Speaking as a woman of transsexual experience, this is one of the best books on the suject which I have ever read.
