A superior entry in the Johnstone line of western novels. The J. A. Johnstone ghost writer does a fine job of capturing the flavor of Preacher, one the the late author's best characters.

Here, Preacher hooks up with a group of men with a horse herd attacked by the Blackfeet, driving off the band of Red Knife, a chief with a mad-on against all white men because a group had butchered his two sons.

They make it to a distant fort where Preacher finds himself caught up in a romantic triangle involving his new friend, the owner of the herd of horses, and the fort's boss and his wife.

And Red Knife is still around and the fort is soon under attack.

Tense battles, betrayals, and revenge highlight this fine entry in the Preacher series.

Having read most of Johnstones westerns, this is another Preacher hero type, with the big man stepping up to lead a late in the year wagon train back to winter safely before advancing to the west for new found fortune. They are accousted by an indian tribe, after the one of theres kill an indian boy while hunting .Preacher finally gets to the bottom of the reason the indians are upset with the travelers. Had a couple of new twists for the Johnstone's which was good. The really can get routine in this series of episodes on the life and times of the west.

I do enjoy the majority of the Johnstone's work. It does have a pattern and a set that can be produced over and over. However the characters are a treat and the stories are well written. And for someone has been dead for about thirteen years is still writing great western fiction, I say great going. All kidding aside, all the books are great. My favorite is the "Eagles" series. What great movies these books would make. There is a new character named "Sixkiller" US Marshall that hey have written about. However, it is not available on Kindle books. I would love to read it.

I'm a huge wwj fan, I've read 30-40 of his books in the last two years. Unfortunately this is the first of his I stopped reading and threw away. I'm pretty familiar with wwj's voice in his writing and the first thing that struck me was that in this book the characters didn't speak the same. The narrator spoke differently than other books and some of the classic wwj lines that are in every other of his books weren't in here.

I read somewhere online that another author has taken over his writings and I can't help but think there are other books, including this one, the other author might have penned without credit. I wouldn't recommend this book to new readers or sadly long time fans.

Recommend this book for all who love the Preacher series. Preacher is in for it now. Indians are chasing a family who started their journey too late in the year. Preacher saves the day again.

The mountain series beggining with the first mountain man, was what brought me to william W. Johnstone. I read as many of these as I could find. I then read as many of the Smoke jensen, the last mountain man, books I could find. Then went ot Matt Jensen. All of these intermigle with the characters developed by bringing in Preacher to help develope Smoke Jensen, then bringing Smoke Jensen in to help develope Matt Jensen. All these books have been wonderful reading.

A description of the Preacher; The ultimate Mountain Man! One very tough dude that no matter what happens, he somehow survives. He's killed a grizzly bear with his Green River knife, Been shot with Minnie balls and arrows, stabbed with knives, banged up by tomahawks, and (almost) been burned at the stake which is where he was given the name "Preacher".

If you enjoy stories like this, don't bother reading reviews about the Preacher, just buy the book and start reading.
