Praise for. Marge Piercy. Reading a book by Marge Piercy is like sitting around a warm inviting fire with old friends: you know you will be entertained, hopefully you will be amused, and if you dare to invest yourself, you will certainly learn something.

Praise for. It is part of Miss Piercy’s charm that she never provides elaborate literary flourishes to describe basic human behavior. Her characters may be terrorists or cookbook writers, but they are the salt of the earth.

Almost ten years ago I discovered the author Marge Piercy when I read her novel He, She, and It. As I do with any author whose book I really, really love, I ran right out and bought every other book of hers I could get my hands on, including Small Changes, which the cover blurb promised showcased two women and the changes they make in their lives. I read this 35 years ago and I've read every book by Marge Piercy since. I wanted to revisit this book and found it on amazon. I had forgotten the details of the story and only remembered that the book inspired me. I was not disappointed as I reread it. The book's main characters are women and explores their struggles, challenges and choices as young women embracing equality within the patriarchal society of the 1970's. It is still relevant, unfortunately.

A journey of self-discovery.

Not the book for me, although it is well written.

Some of the writing in "Small Changes" is pedestrian and didactic--true. But if you want to know what the beginning of the women's movement actually felt like, this is the book to read.

I was a young child when this book came out originally, but I can honestly say I might be a very different person now if I hadn't found it in the used-bookstore when I was seventeen. I have to say, it holds up fine on Kindle, and now that I'm in my thirties, and reread it, I found myself much more forgiving of characters and choices I'd previously disparaged. Thought-provoking and inspiring.

I first read this novel in the late 80s. I would have been a contemporary of Wanda's kids, and grew up somewhat in that milieu in the early 70s. It appealed to my nostalgia, while also allowing me a window into what the "grownups" were dealing w/ at the time. Reading it over 20 years later, from the perspective of middle age, I found I still enjoyed it - and some things that I hadn't caught or paid attention to first time around (e.g. Neal & Miriam's computer company working for ARPA and the idea/plan of "lashing lots of computers together") was also fascinating. Or how Beth was able to fly without showing any i.d. by paying cash.

Unfortunately, the kindle edition has LOTS of typos. I reported scores via the reporting method in the kindle device, and hope they will be cleaned up.

I have not reread Small Changes yet this time but have read it at least 5 times in the past, probably more. It is an excellent piece of fiction from a top notch author. I think Small Changes may be Peircy's best novel or certainly one of the best. It deals with the stigma and indignities of the mental health system, racism, ecology, relationships and more. It takes place in the future but is not science fictiony. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good novel.
feminism circa 1965. Ok storyline but one of the women in particular gets a raw deal from the author. Ms Piercy coulda done better
