Andrew Greeley wrote about five "Angel" books - the first being Angel Light (read my review). They are all great, fun and will keep you chuckling, while dealing with serious topics with the lightheartedness of the Irish Greeley!!! Give them a try! Give anything by Greeley a try. He was a Catholic priest who really understood real people!!! Great sense of humor and love of all things Irish!!! Don't hold it against him - he was Irish - he didn't have a choice!!! The Irish all have a great sense of humor, and Greeley was among the best!!!!! I learned more about God's love for me than 40 years of scripture reading and homilies!!! He's a real grace and gift to readers!!!
I am a complete Andrew Greeley fan. This book came up short though. I never finished it. It was soooo slow.
Angel Fire is a story about unbounded, incomprehensible love.
The tale mostly depicts two persons Sean Seamus Desmond, and Gabriella Light. Sean Seamus Desmond, a professor of theoretical biology at City University of Chicago, who wins the Nobel Prize with a very controversial theory concerning "punctuation". Specifically he discovered times of great leaps, that he labels punctuation points in evolution, these points show a directionality of evolution. That "direction" is evolution moving to spirituality.

Gabriella Light is an angel who is assigned as Dr. Desmond's guardian angel to protect him from possible assassination and kidnaping by those who may wish to use his theories to develop or control angel power (called alien power by most).

This fable takes us on a journey to Washington DC, London, Stockholm, Leipzig, Paris, and Dublin. In each location Sean attends receptions, news conferences, and gives lectures at nearby universities. Gabriella, or Gabby to Sean, acts as his assistant and protector.

The book has numerous fascinating scenes of Gaby protecting Dr. Desmond. The defense tactics are unusual and spectacular but always effective. Sean, who begins the story as an agnostic scientist, slowly starts to believe in angels, and possibly God.

It is the interesting explanations of love, in this novel that fascinate me. Greeley, as is his habit, inserts unusual expressions concerning love into character dialogue. For example: "evolution is in the direction of love"; and "fireballs of love can be dangerous, if you get caught in one of them".

Greeley's love theory is particularly beautiful when he explains the connection of "mind" and love. As evolution occurs the "mind" slowly develops into consciousness, and consciousness into love. As the "mind" grows, love blossoms. And as the angel states "if there is pure mind, and we both believe that there is, you can imagine the power of that love."

I recommend this novel, the theology is interesting and the story delightful.
. . .and a unique perspective help make this novel by controversial Catholic priest Fr. Andrew M. Greeley quite enjoyable.
As stated in other reviews, there are elements of Fr. Greeley's theological viewpoint in which I find myself in sharp disagreement. But there is no doubt that he is an outstanding storyteller.
In this book, Greeley ventures into the realm of Science Fiction with the introduction of the amazing character of Dr. Gabriella Light, PhD. -- the angel Gabriel, no less -- as a personal guide for the lapsed Dr. Sean Desmond on his trip to Sweden to pick up the Nobel Prize. It seems that terrorists are after Dr. Desmond because of the potential implications of his scientific discoveries.
Fr. Greeley's style is not for everybody. He dabbles a little to far into the erotic than might be considered strictly appropriate for a celibate clergyman. His incorporation of his criticisms of modern Catholicism into his books can serve as a turn-off.
BUT, Fr. Greeley is a great storyteller in the old Irish tradition. His imagination is incredible. And his fundamental faith in the goodness and grace of God is inescapable.
For me, this is one of his best offerings.
Boring! Not nearly up to Greeley's usual. Greeley is usually spellbinding. This one is a 0 on a scale of 0-10.
Another of Grreley's novel designed to provoke thought and insight.
Fast Lovebird
This is another of his that is well done and a good plot.
Several years ago my mother was an ardent reader of everything Greeley, if a new book was released that year, it would appear on her Christmas list. I did not pay much attention, nor did I read any of his works, that is until a few weeks ago. I read Angel Fire, and fell in love with this mans writing. I have since purchased seven more of his books and especially the Blackie Ryan series. Angel Fire is a fast, fun and delightful read, the two main characters, human and digital are fantastic. This is a great book for the shore, but a word of advice buy several of his books because you will not want to put them down.
