During conversations with friends and people we might be talking to at some point, we get asked about some of the things we did or were a party to, and so, the stories come out.

Michael Rusin is a masterful storyteller who incorporates real survivalist skills to captivate his readers. Avalon was quite the intriguing book. Initially there is a terrorist nuclear attack on the east coast of the US which leads to World War three between the US, Russia and China. It is a devastating nuclear war. The East Coast and West Coasts of the US become radiated killing zones. To enter there is to die a slow agonizing death. When the war ends, most of the people on earth are dead. An old 19th Century abandoned cattle ranch called Avalon becomes a refuge for a few people who want to survive. They fight off repeated attacks by cannibalistic motorcycle gangs who have banded together into large feudal groups led by cut throats, and savage butchers who eat children and make slaves out of the other captives they encounter. It is a world turned inside out with no law and nobody to protect the straggler, there is no longer any military or law enforcement to protect those who have survivived. The only protection is with the groups who band together. Some of those are residing at Avalon. The ranch and the residents themselves, the citizen soldiers banded together for mutual support and protection. Avalon is a refuge for those who live there. They have food and all the amenities a real sanctuary offers those who have nowhere to go or to hide and had the foresight to prepare ahead of time just in case a disaster happened. These are warrior residents in a world gone mad and those who are left are mostly refugees and at the mercy of anyone who happens along. Alone, one is either a slave, food or simply defenseless and ultimately dead. If you have ever wondered how to put together a retreat, stock it and make it ready for any eventuality of cataclysmic proportions, Avalon is a must read. You will see how they did it and realize, you can too.

Avalon was quite the intriguing book. The SURVIVALIST topic was a delightful diversion from my normal genre reading. It stretched me to the limit. I fell in love with some of the characters. I just wished the characters weren't fictional as I would love to have a cup of coffee with them and just ask them questions especially Penny Rolls - the librarian. I just wanted to pick her brain and see what books the group felt were important to bring by the time the "c--- had hit the fan" as mentioned on page 78! Looking forward to reading Avalon: Beyond the Retreat next. Great job Mr. Rusin!

I noticed this book on Amazon and because I enjoy "Post Apocalypse" stories I stopped and pondered it. My first thought was "Ho Hum' another self published thing, but then notice it was actually from a publisher so I read the synopsis and liked what I read so I ordered the book. To my delight, the story grabbed me in the first paragraph. The author, L. Michael Rusin gets things going at a fast pace and we know right away we are in for a fun ride. The story revolves around a group of ordinary people from diverse backgrounds who have long been preparing for TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) and have found, purchased and restored an old ranch, deep in the back country of California. The ranch it turns out was once a retreat for the rich and famous and thrived until the rail road went away at which point it declined and was abandoned and sat for 80 years.

The story has good guys and as you would expect, there are also bad guys. The bad guys turn out to be "Hell's Angels" on steroids and the ensuing meeting of the two groups make for exciting reading. The heroes of the story are heroic (but not too heroic) and the bad guys are wonderfully nasty. Rusin does a good job of character development so that we actually know the protagonists and care about them. Avalon, the ranch is beautifully described and although maybe just a bit over the top is what and where we all can see ourselves.

This is a great read.!

If you like James Wesley Rawles "Patriots" you would probably like this book. To me they both has a lot in common in regards to scenarios and what takes place. I mean there are only a few real scenarios one can have in a TEOTWAWKI situation. It is a good read and stays pretty steady. If you are looking for a good book to sit with over the weekend, this is a pretty good book, entertaining and got some plausible nuggets of information. On the flip side, there were portions which were pretty predictable, thus the 4 stars and not 5. Survive The Coming Storm - Cheers!

Everything is described in exacting detail. If you are the type that enjoys an extremely high level of detail then you will love this book. I personally prefer to have the latitude to envision certain details based on the whims of my own imagination and so I reviewed the book a little more strictly than I otherwise would have.

Damn it. I have a nice little retirement farm but no mountain. Not even a hint of a resort or tank. Exciting ACTION and then good guys won....so far. Looking forward to the next chapter in the Avalon saga. Oh, very effective proofreading

I was looking for a book to read and came across this one. I like reading PAW fiction so I bought it. It was good and I couldn't put it down.

I found this book over a year ago on this site and was very interested but due to the cost vs. many other works of the same genre I hesitated buying it. It seems at time I enjoy the looking and evaluating my purchases almost as much as I enjoy the reading of the works. But that being said, I found it well worth the money when I finally "pulled the trigger". The author has a well woven plot and theme that is presented well. I enjoyed the logistics and the balanced mental aspect of this start-up community and wish that some group would make a honest, fair attempt at this endeavor. But sadly when this is even proposed it seems only the negative and the failures are publicized. The ending begs for a sequel which I understand is in the final stages of production. My single word of advice to anyone waiting as I did --- don't, you will enjoy the author's efforts and then spending a lot time thinking and wishing.
The detail and depth of this book are really good. Mike is a little bit cromangnon man for me and the few characters developed are kind of stereotypically one dimensional. The fantasy property was both awesome and ridiculous. What a great fantasy to buy a hidden remote 400 hundred acre mountain retreat nearly 100 years old with only a layer of dust and everything you would need to survive. It's like wandering up to the Biltmore unnoticed. Oh and with a fully stocked bar that will last a century! Where do I sign!? This was a fun read about a serious topic and the author did a great job pulling me in. The author lost me on the new Constitution imposed on the country though... and the Feds installing people into office at the State level (Governor and Lt. Governor) made me cringe. Time well spent overall!
