Elmore Leonard's Western Roundup Escape from Five Shadows, Last Stand at Saber River, and the Law at Randado. All three novels are recognisably Leonard: you could almost tell who wrote them without reading the author's name on the cover. The Bounty Hunters has a typical Leonard plot. A cavalry scout and a green US army Lieutenant are sent into Mexico, incognito, to capture a renegade Apache.

Elmore John Leonard Jr. (October 11, 1925 – August 20, 2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. His earliest novels, published in the 1950s, were Westerns, but he went on to specialize in crime fiction and suspense thrillers, many of which have been adapted into motion pictures. Among his best-known works are Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Swag, Hombre, Mr. Majestyk, and Rum Punch (adapted as the film Jackie Brown).

Not so long ago, my dad asked me if I had ever watched the Justified series on FX. I replied that, no, I hadn’t but it looked good. I’m a huge fan of Elmore Leonard.

We talked about about Get Shorty and 3:10 to Yuma, both based on Elmore Leonard stories. I recommend The Hot Kid, which was my first experience with Mr. Leonard, and a book that blew me away. Changed my world. Showed me what a writer could really do. Something about this great writer’s mastery of character and dialogue resonates with me to this day.

Gunsights went on my “to listen” list once I purchased a copy from Audible.com. I finished the Talisman by Stephen King, and dove into something completely different. Gunsights is a Western. I’ve read comparatively few westerns, but enjoy them. I grew up with movie Westerns, of course. I’ll be your huckleberry.

One of the biggest things I noticed about Gunsights was the rapidly shifting points-of-view. The story was still entertaining. I still wanted to step into the world and have an adventure, but it occurred to me that if a young writer these days took a book written in the omniscient point-of-view to an agent or an editor, they would get shut down faster than you can say 45 Long Colt. Elmore Leonard published this book in 1982, I believe. The industry and readers tastes have probably changed a bit, so it’s all good.

I definitely recommend this book, whether you read it or listen to it. (I did both, since the audiobook and ebook synchronize.) Josh Clark, the narrator, did an excellent job. I enjoyed it enough that I will probably go on a fresh Elmore Leonard binge, something I do from time to time.

This was a fun read from one end to the other. Elmore Leonard's last western novel was a comfortable read. Jumping back and forth between the lives of Dana Moon, Indian Scout, and horse trader and Lt. Brendan Early of the United State Cavalry (retired), he weaves a tale of the southwest at the end of the Indian Wars. It also brings to a close the saga, of Phil Sundeen. Sundeen, a low life, with no morals and an enflated ego, is first introduced in Leonard's Law At Randado, where he does not fare well at all. In Gunsights, his tale comes to a violent, and well deserved, conclusion. A fun read.

This is now one of my favorite Elmore Leonard westerns. Circumstance forces Capt. Bren Early and Dana Moon to partner up on several occasions athough their lives take them in differing directions. Leonard proves again and again why he is a master of story-telling.

I found this to be a quick, engrossing read. Elmore's characters are all interesting and most are likeable, even some of the bad ones. The story had twists and turns and good dialogue that keeps the reader going.

Elmore Leonard is always reliable with his first-rate storytelling, and this Western is no exception. Interesting characters, top-notch dialogue, suspenseful twists and turns.

What can I say? I read a wide variety of genres - seems lately there's been a bit of a drought regarding contemporary literature. Whenever I'm craving a refreshing read - I go to the Elmore Leonard westerns. I'm never let down. If you've never read them, read them. If you have read them, read them again. Amazing that they were written between the 50's and into the 70's - they seem more pertinent now than ever.

Elmore Leonard is one of my favorite crime writers but his westerns are gritty and realistic and portray people and times that are slipping into the past but come alive in the pages of his books. Always a great ending but with a twist. Pure enjoyment and escapism to an earlier era at it's finest. Tough times, tough people and the great west at it's lawless best. Elmore see the nuances of law enforcement as the dance of right and wrong and who has the power to decide.
Please understand I'm a rabid Elmore Leonard fan. It's like seeing Denzel Washington's name on a marquee...if they do the work I'll show up. Elmore Leonard's wry humor, his ability to capture vernacular and period customs, and his just plain wonderful way with a story, are all on display in "Gunsights".
