Polly Samson (born 29 April 1962) is an English novelist, lyricist and journalist. She is married to musician David Gilmour, and has written the lyrics to many of Gilmour's works, both as a solo artist and with the group Pink Floyd.

Asked whether her first novel, Out of the Picture (2001), which she dedicated to Charlie and is all about a young woman’s attempts to reconnect with her absent artist-father, expressed the hope that Charlie might in some way reconnect with his own lost parent, the poet Heathcote Williams, Samson says she wonders if the book wasn’t more about. Contact with Winnington, the second father of her early years, suddenly stopped: No one thought I might have a yearning and looking back now I think I did. She later learned he had kept one of her baby shoes all his life.

Quite unlike her fair stepsisters, Lizzie is dark and secretive: "Just like your father," says her mother-but what was her father like? Photos of him are hidden away; snatches of overheard conversation between her mother and her stepfather deepen the mystery.

Only her best friend Savannah - also abandoned by her father when she was a baby - knows what it feels like to wonder, to try and piece together an earlier story.

Only her best friend Savannah - also abandoned by her father when she was a baby - knows what it feels like to wonder, to try and piece together an earlier story. But when events propel Lizzie alone to London she stops wondering and starts searching...Beautifully evoking the ache of childhood loss, the scrappy joys of chaotic families, and the hurt and relief of understanding, OUT OF THE PICTURE reveals Polly Samson's talent for laying bare the uncomfortable truths that lie just under the skin - in every family, in every secret.

I completely agree with David C Warden's above review, it was in fact a delight to read! I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Samson's book and will now begin reading The Kindness. I was immediately captivated by Lizzie's complex character and was rooting for her around each twist and turn. I could see my own daughter in Lizzie and this book helped me better understand the struggles and insecurities she had endured growing up in a blended family. This book is enlightening, entertaining and a must read. Thank you Polly Samson for sharing your gift with us!

I knew that she is the wife of David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and I assumed as i am sure many did that she is only famous due to her husband's profession. When I read the story i was wrong! Her writing is witty, eloquent, and quite a page turner for this being her first novel. I had read "Perfect Lives" previous to this. Well done Polly!

Excellent. Very well written.

The modern novel has found new energy here. It allows for thought while and after you read. I look forward to reading her other books and short stories.

This is one of my favourite books of all time. I found the story very interesting but mostly I just loved the way it was written. Every sentence is a treat!!!

To argue that this is a run-of-the-mill piece of modern fiction is to do it perhaps the greatest disservice. I doubt any author of the past two decades has been able to so successfully capture the nuances and insecurities of the human psyche as well as Polly Samson has in her debut novel. Dialogue is crisp and flows with the narration; no one ever says something that the reader cannot understand, so astute is the writers characterisation. The heartache of the lead character may relate directly to Samson's own youth, or that of her son - I have no idea, or desire to know. Regardless, everyone will be able to identify with her desires, her sense of loss and pain, and above all, the never-ending search for something better.
It is a delightful book, which deserves to be read and re-read.
