Poetic Meter and Poetic Form. A book about the meaning of travel, about how important the topic has been for writers for two and a half centuries, and about how excellent the literature of travel happened to be in England and America in the 1920s and 30s. The Great War and Modern Memory. The year 2000 marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most original and gripping volumes ever written about the First World War.

Paul Fussell's book proves true to these words and I did find this clear, concise, and engaging read did greatly increase my understanding and appreciation for English poetic meter and form. Using classic and modern examples, he builds a strong case with dazzling examples as Oscar Wilde getting it wrong while William Carlos Williams gets it right. He gave me a very fresh understanding of how the physical structure of a poem can be of equal importance as the music of the work. And the grumpy way he is upset over sloppiness of poetic form, i found adorable, but i have hardly ever met a curmudgeon I didn't like almost instantly.

I used this book for my Literary Analysis class and it helps explain all different kinds of poetic forms. It goes into detail about Petrachan and Shakespearean sonnets and talks in length about meter. The only down side about Fussell is he tends to go on and on about some of the less important stuff but overall it's a very helpful book about poetry if you're willing to commit.

This is really a fantastic book for those of us who are interested in the art form and all that entails. Namely this book focuses on how meter and forms are used to create and compliment the feelings of the poems in question. The first chapter on scansion is a bit of a boot camp (and godsend?) for those who have not been satisfied by mere wikipedia research. I must say I had a really difficult time, as both a writer and a reader, in discerning and implementing exactly the art of metrical analysis. Most of the chapters are well structured and interesting, but tend to focus on non-contemporary poetry, or even recent poetry, or poetry after 1900.
That being said, Paul Fussel is somewhat of a poetic prude, as exemplified in his exclusion of a discussion on free verse (a huge literary movement that erupted in the 20th century, as I'm sure you know)until this edition; even so, the chapter on free-verse is skimpy and pretty much useless. Unfortunately, I would say it's not worth the paper it's printed on. However, this book has a lot of great ideas on poetry, and if you take it with some skepticism, it should be a wonderful companion to any lover of poetry (but check your library first).

This is a must for anyone seeking to understand how poetic verse brings together the various elements of language to form beautiful, meaningful and memorable expressions of the human heart. The explanations are clear and supported by many wonderful examples.

This is a treasure for those of us who love poetry but lack formal training.

I really liked the fact that the product was exactly in the shape that was described. I am a big fan of honesty, and the person I bought this from had that quality, I think. The product itself was in the perfect condition for the class I needed it in, and the few notes that were marked in it were helpful and by no means annoying. I am happy to be the new owner of this book, and I plan to use it even outside of the class I had gotten for.
The book has been written in extensively. Extremely high price for a paperback book in such poor condition.
