Both books were in his friend Willibald Pirckheimer's library. Dürer introduced additional pictographs on the beauty of mathematics from Luca Pacioli's "Divina proportione" (Venice, 1509). Plato's dialogue ends with Socrates and Hippias acknowledging their failure to discover the Beautiful, a condition Dürer both revealed and concealed with the motto "Melencolia .
In their Preface the two authors acknowledge that "only a few major literary works of the classical period of Middle High German have reached a wider public" (xi). and Reformation 1280- 1580, James Hardin and Max Reinhart, ed. 1997). Still, the Ackermann represents a transition point in the history of German literature, probably the first text influenced by Renaissance thinking (I have explored this in an article "Der Ackermann aus Boehmen - Ein literarisches Zeugnis aus einer Schwellenzeit," Zeitschrift fuer deutsche Philologie 110, 3, not listed here).
