This book started out a little rough. There were too many character names to keep straight (each had their own name and their soap opera character’s name) so I was confused for several chapters. Then there was an entire chapter that was 100% backstory, which pretty much interrupted any momentum I’d gained and took me out of the story being told (would have been better as a prologue? Or worked in some other way). Also, there was a lot of *telling* rather than *showing* the character’s thoughts and actions. I almost quit reading.

I’m glad I didn’t! As the book went on, I found myself really wrapped up in the story despite having no interest in Regency period history or soap operas. As a writer myself, I understood how Jenny’s characters were created (consciously and subconsciously) from bits and pieces of the people in her life. So I found the way the soap characters evolved (and how Jenny makes realizations about them) really fascinating.

Alec is the slightly more mature and self-aware hero than typical, which I liked a LOT. I loved the way the author showed his realization about his feelings for Jenny. The reason for the confrontation with Jenny’s boyfriend, Brian, was a little predictable, but the immediate aftermath between Alec and Jenny was really good stuff. Then there was the ending… the author used a soap opera character analogy (for lack of a better word) and although it worked to create an HEA, I found it confusing and a bit of an anticlimax. Thus if I could I’d give it a 3.5 star review.
Kathy Seidel has such an original voice. Her characters are so finely crafted. Jenny Cotton is delightful, the creator and head writer of a regency soap opera. (Just go with it, okay? Trust me.) She's perfectly at home in her little kingdom, in her show, and a mess of insecurities outside of it. Alec Cameron is so nice at his core, you think, How interesting could he possibly be? He's perfect. And he is, but he's also so kind and protective of Jenny.

I have read this book over and over, have given it to so many friends. So happy to see it in e-book form.
I read this a while back when someone mentioned how much they enjoyed Ms. Seidel's books. Back then I could only get a used paper copy, but I was very glad I made the effort as it is a delightful story. The exact plot details have grown a bit dim in my aging mind, but Jenny and Alec were the type of people you not only want to read about, but you'd be perfectly happy to work with them, spend weekends with them, and most definitely attend their wedding. I was sorry to turn the last page.
Loved this book. Unlike many series that have predictable plots, while you know the ultimate ending of the Hometown Memories books, the stories are full of surprising twists and interesting sub-plots. The writing is excellent and makes the book a pure pleasure to read. Having the characters' stories and personalities mirrored and enhanced through the personalities that appear in their TV drama is a fantastic way to expose their feelings and intentions.
I'm so glad to find Kathleen's books for Kindle! I read her books a long time ago and enjoy her so much.
This was a delightful story of how the screenwriter used her life and characters she knew in her writing and how the actor portraying her writing gave it a special meaning. So much fun to watch the ins and outs as they interacted.

This is one of my favorite books by this author! She takes you into the story, teaches you things about daytime soap opera that you never imagined. It is a little out of date now (everyone would have had a cell phone), but it is an excellent book. Love the way that Jenny (the head writer/creator of the show) uses the people in her life in the characters in her soap opera. A Must Read!
This is a good book and a comfortable read. The setting is interesting the characters varied. It can be a little confusing but not unbearably. Kathleen Gilles Seidel is an excellent author and this is up to her usual form.
This book is one of the best I've read all year. The characters are realistic and sympathetic without being paragons. The Regency soap opera is a great plot device that is so much more than mere device. Seidel uses the language beautifully and it seems downright tragic she is not better known AND that she's not really writin romances anymore. Her characters are engaging, her plots are tight and well-paced and her writing is incredible. I can't gush enough about this book enough. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
