Laura Ingalls Wilder. Illustrated by Garth Williams. Chapter 1. Going West. Nobody lived in the little house; it was a place to camp in. It was a tiny house, and strange, with a big fireplace and rough bunks against all the walls. A long time ago, when all the grandfathers and grandmothers of today were little boys and little girls or very small babies, or perhaps not even born, Pa and Ma and Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. They drove away and left it lonely and empty in the clearing among the big trees, and they never saw that little house again. They were going to the Indian country. But it was warm when Pa had built a fire in the fireplace.

A wonderful collection of Mrs. Wilder's later writings. I had been given a copy when I was in high school, but then lost it in one of my moves as an adult. I had to have it for my collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

Laura seemed to find satisfaction and meaning in living the country life. It gave me a new appreciation for my mother, who had this same sense of how to live a fulfilled life with her husband and family, even after the children grew up and left home.

Nice to have more about Laura and her life in the Ozarks. Her series left me curious about how everything worked out.
What a delight to find this and get a rounded picture of Laura as an adult. She was an amazing woman. I thoroughly enjoyed her comments on the farming scene in America; seen through the articles she wrote over the years for the newspapers and magazines of her day. A book to browse or read straight through a really worthwhile read.
