The Parthian shot is a light horse military tactic made famous in the West by the Parthians, an ancient Iranian people. While in real or feigned retreat their horse archers would turn their bodies back in full gallop to shoot at the pursuing enemy. The maneuver required superb equestrian skills, since the rider's hands were occupied by his composite bow. As the stirrup had not been invented at the time of the Parthians, the rider relied solely on pressure from his legs to guide his horse.

Little, I believe, was actually an Army Special Forces medic in Vietnam in the early 60's. His book is beautifully satiric and features some seldom-depicted characters of Special Forces legend. Anyone wanting to get a look at how Special Forces used to be when young men still heeded JFK's call should read this. The plot features a team working with the Hao Hao religious minority in Vietnam's Delta region in the early 60's, before the massive influx of .

tough to determine fact from fiction, but a good read
Insanity
Funny-a lot closer to the truth then one from SF would LIke.

I was a latter day Special Forces soldier. We simply informed people we wore a beret but were SF in those days. I knew a lot of the lore that Little writes about but the way he perceived things in his book was "outstanding" to use a common SF expression. I think the book was probably a lot more poignant for me having served in Viet Nam and visited the remains of some of those places he mentions. Loyd Little may not make himself to be heroic but he is every bit as heroic as anyone else. He put his life on the line and was badly wounded where no one wants to be shot in their worse nightmares. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone but his description of the catfish pond toilet/latrine/outhouse is hilarious. Being an author ("Redemption At Purgatory") and former SF myself I probably appreciate Little's whole package more than someone who is just looking for a good read. It isn't just a good read. Its a fantastic read. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Little captures the essence of an American caught up in war surrounded by indigenous peoples whose customs and mores are alien to him. The scene of the American woman innocently making night-time use of the standard Mekong Delta toilet, much to the amusement of a hundred odd 'strikers', had me rolling on the floor. Normally, one of those 'you had to be there' scenes, Little captured it so well it is still with me after several decades.

A Parthian shot indeed.

AS AN OLD VIETNAM ERA SPECIAL FORCES VETERAN, I WAS TOLD BY ANOTHER OLD SFr TO "READ THAT DAMNED BOOK!"

IT'S A CASE OF A CONTINUAL, ROLL IN THE FLOOR, HILARIOUS, ONE SCREW-UP AFTER ANOTHER, SCREAMINGLY FUNNY SERIES OF ALL-TOO-BELIEVABLE UNBELIEVABLE MESSES PILED ONE ON TOP OF ANOTHER!!!

IT STARTS WITH THEIR LOSING RADIO CONTACT WITH "HIGHER UP" JUST PRIOR TO THIER SCHEDULED RELIEF AND ROTATING BACK TO THE STATES. A FEW WEEKS LATER, THEY MANAGE TO RE-ESTABLISH CONTACT ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE (PRESUMABLY) ALREADY BEEN SENT HOME. THEY ARE ALSO TOLD THAT THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY VIET CONG WHO GOT HOLD OF AMERICAN EQUIPMENT AND CODES AND IF THEY TRY THIS TRICK AGAIN, THEY'LL BE BOMBED OFF THE FACE OF THE PLANET!

FROM THERE, THEIR NEED TO FIND SOME MEANS OF "SUPPORT" (OTHER THAN THE BRASSIERE FACTORY THEY PUT TOGETHER) INVOLVES THEM IN THE FUNNIEST SERIES OF MISADVENTURES YOU COULD NEVER IMAGINE!

WAR IS OFTEN A CIRCUS OF BLACK HUMOR -- THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE!

Anyone wanting to get a look at how Special Forces used to be when young men still heeded JFK's call should read this. The plot features a team working with the Hao Hao religious minority in Vietnam's Delta region in the early 60's, before the massive influx of U.S. troops. The team has somehow been forgotten by Saigon when the team's higher HQ is rotated back to the states. The team decides to wait and work with the Hoa Hao until the mess is straightened out. In the meantime, the team starts a brassiere and lawn chair factory, commissions a Rand corporation study to look for ways to keep the Hoa Hao out of the fighting, and the team medic (the narrator) is ordained a water-walking saint in the Hoa Hao religion. A howl of a book.
