He was born in Calcutta, India, where he spent the first seven years of his life.

He was born in Calcutta, India, where he spent the first seven years of his life. When he was sent to be educated in Falmouth, England, Ross spoke better Hindustani than English.

In fact, he was a man of letters par excellence. Born in India, educated in England, he joined the Royal Navy in the Second World War and endured the Arctic convoys to Russia. He also discovered many new talents.

Effected Intent is a bioterrorism meets cyber thriller with an unlikely protagonist at the center of the story. Steve Pfister is a reticent polymer chemist who lives in the past, unable to let go of his military experience. His latest invention gets the attention of some high level government officials, leading to an opportunity to work on a top secret project with national security implications. Life couldn’t be more routine for computer programmer Bill Miller, until he stumbles on information that he shouldn’t have, including a bioterrorism plot.

The symphonic quality of this wistful and, at times, very moving collection is maintained with a final section of 15 new poems, mostly relating to the author's more recent travels. Winter Sea is a book to savour; Alan Ross brings history to life as only a poet ca. Euan Cameron, Independent.

Alan Strode Campbell Ross (1 February 1907 – 23 September 1980) was a British academic specialising in linguistics.
