Anything written by Frank H. Spearman is worth reading. Takes you back to the early part of last century and is very well written. I paid a lot of money for the hard cover version of this and several other of his books. They are hard to find in print anymore. Several of them were lost during a move several years ago and I was thrilled to find them here on kindle. This kindle ebook was free as are all his other books. Take advantage of these free books. The Nerve of Foley, Held for Orders, Whispering Smith, Nan of Music Mountain, The Daughter of a Magnate, Laramie Holds the Range, and The Mountain Divide are all free here on kindle. Treat yourself and read them.

Very much enjoyed the railroad stories. My Great Grandfather was a railroad man and these stories brought to life his experiences to a generation that would otherwise never know what the early railroad looked like. There was enough adventure to keep interest alive as well as technical discriptions that gave clearer understanding to railroad life during the early years. My Grandfather was a telegraph operator and track walker among many other chores and assignments on the railroad so it was interesting to me to read of those particular functions of the railroad. The book covers make an attractive appearance on any bookshelf. Totally satisfied with both volumes.

Description is misleading - as is the picture. They are connected short stories - more than 2, all about railroading - not cowboys. Great reading - lively writing. I had fun reading them outloud on a recent road trip. Highly recommend - especially at .99!

The compilation of stories were enjoyable for me. These stories showed that times were hard and the work was hard.

Great hobby book.

A excellent series of short stories on how railroaders worked in the late 1800s. This is history that we know nothing about today, and it kept my interest all through the book.
