Hailed as the reigning king of the anthology world by Barnes & Noble. com, he has been nominated for the World Fantasy and Hugo awards.

The book clocks in at over 600 pages not just because it’s very difficult to tell short epic stories (though some of these authors do manage to pull it off) but because here the authors are not just telling epic legends, they are legends in and of themselves .

There is a sickness in the land. Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle), and more. Return again to lands you’ve loved or visit magical new worlds.

John Joseph Adams, George R. R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss. From the creation myths and quest sagas of ancient times to the megapopular fantasy novels of today, this quintessential anthology of epic fantasy is adventurous storytelling at its best. With rich and vibrant world building, readers are transported to antiquated realms to witness noble sacrifices and astonishing wonders.

Paolo Bacigalupi - The Alchemist. Homecoming by Robin Hobb is an excellent start to this anthology and one of my favourite stories. Orson Scott Card - Sandmagic. Patrick Rothfuss - The Road to Levinshir. Brandon Sanderson - Rysn. The story is set in the Rain Wilds and is a story of survival as told through the pages of a diary.

Let's be clear from the start--I really *wanted* to like this collection a lot.

I am a big fan of fantasy short story collections. When this one popped up on my radar I figured it would make an excellent addition to the Tanglewood library and placed it on the Short List for ordering.

It's definitely mixed. There are some excellent stories in here ("The Alchemist" has a wonderfully different take on magic and "Sandmagic" is a fine tale of revenge) and some that frankly just didn't make much sense to me ("The Word of Unbinding"). Most fell somewhere in the middle for me--moderately enjoyable as I read them, but more-or-less forgettable as I began the next story. I only skipped a couple and in looking at those as I write this I do note those are from authors I've not enjoyed much in the past, so perhaps it's just a writing style thing.

Of course that's the point of a collection like this, and your mileage may vary. Not a bad collection, just not what I would call "epic".

Many of these stories are of a type I would not have bought myself. Most are of author unknown to me. Every Last Tale was captivating & offered the best of what fiction is & can be. Not since Mitth'raw'nuruodo was murdered have I felt such loss, or walked in such rich worlds.

This is a great compilation from some amazing authors. I enjoyed the entire book and found some authors I'll be reading from now on.

Many of the stories in this anthology are great. For example, The Mystery Knight by George RR Martin is terrific. However, that story (like many of the others) have formerly been published in anthologies that I already own. Meanwhile many of the other stories, like the one by Patrick Rothfuss, are just excerpts from novels that I have already read. While many of hte stories are good, I really feel like this anthology was just a cheap attempt to make some extra cash.
