I'm a huge fan of Robb's Eve Dallas series, so much so that I'm willing to pay full price for the novellas that she includes in anthologies with Blayney, Gaffney, et al., even though I don't much care for the others, whose stories are pretty standard "supernatural romance" stuff & lack Robb's wit, her ear for dialogue, & her ability to create plausible characters even in completely implausible circumstances (as in, female homicide detective married to world's richest & most handsome man). I give "Chaos in Death" only 3 stars for several reasons. There's not enough of the usual snappy conversations between Dallas & her trusty partner, Peabody. The guaranteed one-every-50-pages sex scene between Dallas & Roarke isn't up to Robb's usual hot standard. And (SPOILER ALERT) Robb's explanation of the weird science that creates the murderer makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
But what really ticked me off about the book is that it started to come apart in my hands at about p. 65. I've got 5-year-old Robb paperbacks that I bought used in merely "good" condition & they're in better shape than this thing. If Penguin is going to charge $7.99, the least they can do is make sure the pages don't fall out.

About the same time I retired I discovered the In Death series by J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts). Eventually I went overboard in my enthusiasm and collected a copy of every In Death novel and novella. So I own all these weird paranormal romance novella collections with a Robb novella and some novellas by the other authors. Out of all of these collections, the novella I loved the best and remember the best is the one by Patricia Gaffney in this collection. The old man who calls the psychic hotline is adorable. His son is grumpy and protective. The woman answering the psychic hot line has her life in a mess and is lonely and kind and sweet. Her aunt is spunky. It is a funny light hearted story with a happy ending. When I get tired of Robb and decided to sell all her books to the Recycled Bookstore, I am keeping this one just for the Gaffney story.

I enjoyed the JD Robb novelette, but the rest of these writers, with the exception of Gaffney, should find another line of work because they really cannot write well. And Gaffney's novelette was a piece of froth. My recommendation is to read the Robb piece if you're an In Death series fan and skip the rest.

I love the whole "In Death" series. The action and counter-play between Eve and her sidekick Peabody as well as the personal interactions between Dallas and Roarke draw the reader into the story and keep him enthralled from beginning to end. The whole supportive staff of cops and villains along with the development of Eve's very special friends is an intriguing and beguiling mix of action and interaction.

Chaos in Death wast the story I was interesting in reading. Gotta love the variety that Robb comes up with for Eve and her team. The story reminded me of Hulk Hogan, a mild mannered scientist being transformed. And, it also reminded me of Jekyll and Hyde. What makes this story interesting is there is no lag in the story, it continues to move along not being bogged down by extra chapters. Eve catches a case of three dead former addicts all in the same rehab program. The facility they are all going to also does research into new methods for treating addictions. Witnesses describe the killer as being green, leaving the scene of the killings dancing and laughing. The picture of the killer is hard for anyone to take seriously. Yet, Eve continues to investigates and eventually identifies the killer and the reasons for them.

I love the Death series. Nora Roberts/J.D.Robb does and excellent job of getting you to fall in love with the characters. Plus the plots are so interesting!

I bought it for the "In Death" short story. While that story was good, it turned out I'd already read it. The other stories were ok, but some of them were not very imaginative. It got better as the book went on. I'd rate it overall as ok, but would not recommend unless you were an avid follower of one of the authors. ( I love JD Robb)
I fully admit I purchased this for the JD Robb book, and now that I've read a few of these compilations with other authors I feel comfortable saying the little stories that follow the Robb novellas are simply painful to read, which stinks because until they eventually print the novellas in the trilogy this is the only way to get them.
