Dear Susan Stewart,
You are right: Paul Strohm is likely a friend or relative of the author. However, the knee-jerk negativity of your review makes me suspect you are are a spurned lover or embittered professional rival of the author. It's a first novel that he published decades ago. It has some flaws. (Old ladies who live in Santa Fe would be unimpressed that Denver is "a mile high," considering their city is a couple thousand feet higher; this incident was clearly just a pretext for pot jokes of the variety that have since become hackneyed since Colorado legalized marijuana--but this is unlikely to peeve any but New Mexican readers.) This novel is indeed more prose-driven than plot-driven. The characters are indeed not so likeable. But then again, the point of the novel seems to be an exploration of the protagonist's psychic suffering. If you dislike books that dwell in the psyche of protagonists who suffer angst, doubt, bitterness, and vague longing, then you will indeed find it insufferable. If you agree that these topics have a place in literature, in spite of the fact that they make for unlikeable characters, then perhaps you will concede: there are worse books you could pick on.
"The Organ Builder" was his first book and I thought it was superb. Carefully crafted characters, beautiful stop-and-re-read prose throughout, highly literate and very funny. He's been compared to Phillip Roth and Saul Bellow for his imaginative and street smart social vision. As for ability/talent, I'd also compare him to Jose Saramago, David Rhodes and Wallace Stegner which is the very highest praise I give. I immediately ordered all his other books and cannot wait to read them!
Dear Paul Strohm, Obviouldy, you are a good friend or relative! This book conatins no plot, no characters with any likeable characteristics, and is a complete waste of time.
