great book!

I've never seen a writer get inside the head of a blues musician so well, taking us to the hard and sublime places at the same time. The main character, Man, is a harmonica and sax player making his way through working class Omaha. Major's brilliance is in his attention to the mind of Man, which gives us the real whether it's dealing with his job, his family, his music--or with perpetual racism. What sends this book up into classic range is Major's use of actual blues lyrics throughout, as thoughts that flow through Man's mind. I've been admiring Major's work for over 25 years now and think that Man is an unforgettable American character.
