If you love ghosts, the paranormal world and haunts this is the book for you. Before a recent trip to Philadelphia my grandson ordered this book. Our trip was full of history and haunts and very enjoyable. Do not skip Eastern State... what a lesson and in history and haunts it is.

The book had interesting points about Eastern State and Fort Mifflin which I had just visited. It also had interesting parts about Philadelphia in general. The book received was in great shape and was worth getting. I would highly recommend the seller also.

I purchased this book after reading A Long Black Veil, in which the characters visit Eastern State Penitentiary in the opening chapters. I love stories about haunted buildings and such. Unfortunately, this book is very limited in its descriptions. You'll think I'm kidding, but there are actual "stories" like this one:

XYZ Catholic School -- It's been said that a ghost lurks in the cemetery behind the school.

A few pages are dedicated to specific investigations and witness testimonies, but it's painful to get those parts. The text is flooded with typos and a liberal use of ellipses. It didn't help that the used book I received was in disgusting condition. Several pages were folded and stained. So gross. Wish I'd saved my money and bought a different book instead!

The book Philadelphia Haunts....This is a great book Very interesting and scary. I know 2 people
who toured this old prison and felt that there was something eerier about the place. I highly recommended
it...it is exciting. I worked in a State Mental Hospital and Prison and believe me there were times I
hard and saw things that could make a great haunted book. This book took me back and gave me some good
thoughts and memories of a haunted place.

I picked this up at a local curiosity shop and not on Amazon. I am always interested in this subject matter, but I have to tell you, this book is a mess. If you are a fan of the English language, get ready to cringe at sentences like "A monstrous stone wall surrounds the perimeter of the penitentiary - a foreboding warning of what lurks amongst the confines within its walls". Ugh.

I don't know if it's the writer's fault or just really bad editing. The book also contains a dedication, an author's note, acknowledgements (misspelled in the book) AND a forward before kicking off 125 scant pages of content that are bizzarely followed by appendices about gemstones and oils that help in ghost hunting. What the hell?

If you can get past the writing style that is reminiscent of a C student trying to impress their 11th grade teacher, there actually is some interesting information about paranormal investigation in the book. The problem is that the author tries to get into so much detail that it REALLY slows things down. Reading about these ghostly encounters only served to bore me.

Anyway, I'm sure Katharine Sarro is a nice person and very good at what she does. She should just stay out of the book game. That, or get better editors.

Sorry if this was harsh but it's honestly how I feel.

More accurately, this should be 3.5 stars. The information was certainly interesting, but I just could not connect with the writer. My reaction was purely subjective.
