By 1649-50 Massachusetts and Nova Scotia had reached what seemed to be a satisfactory arrangement concerning mutual problems. This amicable relationship was not one involving equals, and this may help to explain why both sides had accepted the 1644–46 treaty. In the general context of Massachusetts–Nova Scotia relations for the period 1670 to 1686, the two most influential individuals were Boston’s enterprising merchant John Nelson, who was Temple’s nephew, and Jean-Vincent d’Abbadie de Saint-Castin, the French soldier and Abenaki chief who lived at Pentagouet.
