The 20th century was dominated by wars and conflicts that often altered the balance of power around the globe. The 20th century saw the emergence of "total wars," such as World War I and World War II, which were large enough to encompass nearly the entire world. Other wars, like the Chinese Civil War, remained local but still caused the deaths of millions of people. The conflict, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, involved most of the planet. When it was finally over, more than 60 million people were dead.

Literature of the 20th century refers to world literature produced during the 20th century (1901 to 2000). In terms of the Euro-American tradition, the main periods are captured in the bipartite division, Modernist literature and Postmodern literature, flowering from roughly 1900 to 1940 and 1960 to 1990 respectively, divided, as a rule of thumb, by World War II. The somewhat malleable term of contemporary literature is usually applied with a post-1960 cutoff point.

I think it's fantastic that two twelve-year olds had the tenacity to put together such a comprehensive and intriguing book! I learned A LOT of information about various wars. For example, I was very surprised to learn that Einstein was forced to leave Germany in 1939 because he was Jewish; I hadn't heard that he contacted Franklin Roosevelt directly about how the scientists in Germany were using uranium in a chain reaction to make bombs. As an author, I do hope this is just the beginning for these talented young men and they continue to write relevant and useful material.

For a self proclaimed war buff, I think this is a fascinating account of wars in the 20th century. I look forward to reading the next book.

This book gives a good, very broad overview of the 20th century, and was a quick read.
