The Henry's collection includes over 25,000 objects. The collection includes strong holdings in photography, both historical and contemporary, due to the partial gift and purchase of the Joseph and Elaine Monsen collection. In 1982 the Henry inherited a sizable collection from the University of Washington's former Costume and Textile Study Center. The Henry also holds a James Turrell skyspace, Light Reign, which is illuminated at night by color-shifting LEDs behind frosted glass. Like the Seattle baseball stadium, the skyspace has a retractable roof.

The Henry Art Gallery at the U. of Washington sponsors Short Stories exhibitions, each of which selects from the magnificent depths of the Monsen Collection to present photos illuminating a theme. Produced to commemorate the Gallery's 75th anniversary and also to accompany several such 2001-2002 exhibitions, this book tells four stories: Presence and Loss Views of New York; Worn Social Roles Revealed; Imaging the Orient; and The Photographic Impulse (this is by far the biggest of the exhibitions). The photographs speak eloquently alone, but their incredible variety of expression is heightened by thoughtful juxtaposition. This slim volume is oversize (12x12), allowing for graceful visual display. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
