The American Guide Series was a WPA project in the 1930s and early 1940s, which not only provided jobs and experience to American writers struggling through the Depression, but also created a public relations campaign to promote road travel. Though I lived through much that was written about in this series I didn't live in all the places written about. This is a fine peek into the past by some of the best writers of the 20th Century who, oddly enough, didn't want to be identified as having received a "government handout" for the work they did on this project. This "Sampler" is a very small snippet of the larger body of work of course, but worth having nonetheless.

Enjoyable! This book is arranged by "topic" (WPA guide to America is by region) so the two books complement each other. Any repeat is counted on one hand. An excellent way to know what the country was like when my parents were in their 20's. The WPA writers did it in a "non-history text kind of way". It is as if you were seeing old newsreels or being there.
