I think this book is amazing. Its main purpose is clear, to document the history and ambience of Pacific Grove, a small town on the central coast of California. My amazement comes from how this has been done, by giving voice to over 400 residents and business owners in the town.

Botanical and biological splendor attracted scientists like Edward Flanders Ricketts, made famous by his friend and one-time Pacific Grove resident John Steinbeck. Each year hundreds of groups use its famous conference center, Asilomar, and each fall tens of thousands of Monarch butterflies make a 2,500-mile journey to hang from the pines in great clusters of wafting wings.

Having grown up in Pacific Grove I probably appreciate this book more than some others. In fact I liked it so much I have ordered two more copies, one for my sister and one for my brother. Have also ordered another in this series about the Monterey Peninsula. My father even worked in one of the canneries on Cannery Row that John Steinbeck wrote about. Loved the book, what more can I say?

I grew up in PG with family there going back to the early 1900s. Having been a kid who worked on the wharf for Russ and Margareth Sprague I was looking for info on when "Dad" Sprague started running the glass bottom boat there. Was thrilled to find this great pictorial review of the history of this unique place thanks to "Google"!
