Dan Thrapp is the "Premier Authority" on the "Old West". His research enables him to write great books on History of the Western States of America. My own State of Arizona was indeed the "Wild West" in it's day and Dan Thrapp brings out the history with great background information that helps me see it in a whole different light. His Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography was a "Diamond in the Rough" for guys like me.

Marvelous, comprehensive, readable, fun. Thrapp surprised me by presenting details of the Bascom Affair I thought had only recently come to light. I wish the other two volumes were available. These are a great research tool and a wonderful addition to my library.

Volume 3 of this three part set is every bit as good as the first two volumes and all hold valuable information for researchers and amateur historians. However, there is one entry (on Pages 1151-53) that is glaring in its errors. It deals with the lawman Henry Plumer who was hanged by the Montana Vigilantes in January 1864 as the alleged leader of a huge gang of cuthroats and highwaymen.. First, Thrapp has Plumer's name wrong in that he refers to him as Plummer. Second, the information regarding Plumer's name (he calls him Amos), his parents, place of birth and travel route from Maine to California is all incorrect. Where Mr. Thrapp got this information is not known but he cites Art Pauley, Thomas Dimsdale and Nathaniel Pitt Langford as his main sources. Dimsdale and Langford were both early apologists for the Vigilance Commitee with erroneous stories concerning the alleged Plumer gang; and Pauley used Dimsdale and Langford as his main sources. Anyone using this biographical information of Henry Plumer should check all the information against second and third sources. Other than this singular item the three volumes of this massive project is generally correct and indicates the work Mr. Thrapp put into his project. It is unfortunate he did not research Henry Plumer and the Montana Vigilantes to a tighter degree.

This encyclopedia consists of three volumes published in 1988 together with a supplemental volume published in 1994. In all there are more than 2, 200 pages. The size of the work and it's concentration on a narrow subject allow the author to achieve both comprehensiveness and depth. Most of the names you look for will be there. The entries are factually accurate and cite additional references. The knowledgeable author also provides thoughtful assessments and points out historical questions regarding the subjects. This is an outstanding reference that everyone with an interest in the history of Western America should have both for reference and browsing.
Excellent product. A must for any serious student or writer who specialize in the history of the American West.
