Blandford Forum is an attractive town, with a history that goes back to Anglo-Saxon times. By the 13th century it had become an important market town and by 1724, Daniel Defoe described it as "flourishing. About the Author: Ben Cox has been the honorary curator of the Blandford Museum since it first opened in 1985.

190p, B&W photos throughout. Stone Age man may well have visited Blandford, but it was Bronze Age man who left indelible marks on the local landscape some 4,000 years ago. The Romans were active locally but not apparently on the present town's site. By 1086 no less than nine estates centred on what, within a century, was a flourishing settlement. By then a church was built and by 1216 the market was established. The 'Free Borough' was recorded by 1279 and, at the dawn of the Tudor age, Blandford was a thriving centre of worship, learning and commerce. In 1564 the town suffered the first of a series of disastrous fires, though by 1605, prosperous once again, the Borough was chartered. Blandford was a victim of Civil War depredations, and the further fires in 1677 and 1713. But it was the great fire of 1731 that gutted the town, cauterised a smallpox epidemic and prompted draconian measures to rebuild, generating the magnificent Georgian townscape of today, Blandford's economy was originally agricultural, then cottage industries proliferated, principally in button making. From the 18th century an increasing military presence enhanced local prosperity and the resulting trade brought more business but little change. Canal mania did not succeed in Blandford but the railways did, and opened the town to the world beyond. Today Blandford retains a certain serenity, maintains its traditions and presents a stylish face to that world beyond. The Book of Blandford Forum tells the story of the place and its people from earliest times, with a well researched and entertaining narrative, enhanced by many illustrations.
