The particular excitement of this volume lies in its focus on the everyday realities of Christians' lives in the era of Christian ascendancy and Roman decline. Popular fiction, childrearing and toys, rituals of inclusion, the beginning of veneration of saints and shunning of heretics, the ascetic impulse, food practices all these and more lend color and texture to the story of a "people's" Christianity in this formative stage.

Superb academic read. Enjoyable, straightforward, well researched. We used this for a summer book club in our church, everyone thoroughly loved the text. While it is academic in nature, it is also a fascinating discussion of Late Ancient Christianity from the viewpoint (as much as is possible) of the laity of the time. I learned something new in every chapter. A must read for anyone interested in the real origins of Christianity. Do not skip book one in this series, it provides essential background for this work.

The premise of the series--namely, that of investigating the social and cultural forces at work throughout Late Roman Christianity at the level of the everyday participant--is well illustrated in this wide-ranging series of essays. Although the topic (non-hierarchical, non-patristic Christianity) may intrigue a casual reader, the level of the discussion is keenly aimed at an advanced reader. Offering material for a graduate seminar and bibliographic reference for academic research, this collection is a perfect primer.
