o Superb presentation from the finest collection of American textiles in Europe o Exquisite design features over 200 American quilts The American Museum in Britain's textile collection is recognized not only as the finest collection of American textiles in Europe but also as one that is equal to many collections in the United States. In addition to carpets, embroideries and furnishing fabrics, the Museum boasts an extensive collection of over 200 American quilts ranging from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. It includes prime examples of Whole Cloth quilts, Baltimore Album quilts, Log Cabin quilts and others of traditional patterns. Fifty quilts from the museum's collection that illustrate a variety of techniques and textiles will be highlighted in this new book. The text will consist of both technical and historical information, and tell the quilt's 'story'. The images will feature overall views as well as details, capturing the crispness of the stitching and the differences in fabric textures.

Just received this book and it has to be one of the most beautiful I've seen. It is a very high quality paperback; the front and back covers fold to the inside, like the dust jacket of a hardback, making the side edges very sturdy. Although there are not a lot of pages, don't be fooled into thinking it's not a thorough view of classic American work. Each of the wonderful quilts included is representative of a different style. The book itself is slightly oversized, so each selection is shown in full view in the main photo and there is still room for detail photos and plenty of informational text. (I'm finding it interesting to see how some familiar aspects of textile history are presented from a British viewpoint.) All in all, a book not to be missed.
To get a view of other quilts from this museum, check our Betterton's "Quilts And Coverlets" and "More Quilts And Coverlets". They are small format books, but packed with good photos and text.

I'll begin with the all important photography in this large paperback book with high quality paper. The quality of the photography is outstanding, without exception. There are very large detail photographs, including full page detail photos, as well as full views of the quilts. Quilting pattern and fabric prints are easily seen.

Sheila Betterton, formerly the textile and needlework specialist for the museum and largely responsible for getting this collection going at the America Museum, wrote the preface in 2008. Sadly, she passed away that same year. She began as a volunteer at the Museum in 1963. The book is dedicated to her.

The book begins with the history of the Museum coming to be and who do you think influenced the founders Dr. Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn? None other than our own wonderwoman of quilts, Electra Havenmeyer Webb, who founded and filled The Shelburne Museum in Vermont. It's a small world. The chapter includes an overview of the development of textiles and quilts in America. From here to the end of the book, nearly every page has photographs.

The quilts shown include a wool whole cloth, wool applique, pieced chintz, appliqués of every type and era, Amish, BAQ (looks very much like on held in the Maryland Museum of Art's BAQ collection), signature quilts, presentation album quilt, a 1848 hexagon quilt with inked centers in the typical GFG rosette pattern, and many more truly gorgeous quilts.

The quilts chosen for the book clearly represent American styles and the true nature of our history of quilt making is evident. Many of the quilts are like those seen in our museums and books. It's really quite fun to read what they say. The pride they feel matches ours. It's all good. FYI- Some of the Classic American Quilts will be on exhibit at the museum in Bath in 2010, 13 March - 31 October 2010.

This is a wonderful surprise!! Who would have thought there was a museum with American quilts in England. And what a collection - worth flying over there just to see them. The photos are beautiful. I especially love the close up views.
