Bring the world to your sewing machine! A sumptuously illustrated survey of traditional clothing from across the globe-plus timesaving. It's been my pleasure to own and sew many of these. This book, devoted to the glories of ethnic clothing, is a natural out-growth of their love and respect for hand-made and embellished clothing of the world. It is an excellent overview of the major types of indigenous clothing styles and how they were worn. Sadly, most of these regions have succumbed to the lure of cheaply made Western-style garb.

The Folkwear Book of Ethnic Clothing: Easy Ways to Sew and Embellish Fabulous Garments from Around the World. Although it covers a variety of places from around the world, this book contains enough information about the Middle East and North Africa to be interesting and useful to people who appreciate folk arts from that region. The book opens with an overview of ethnic garments. It discusses traditional garment shapes, such as the tunic, the pull-on pants, the shift, the unconstructed rectangle (such as saris), the coat that is open in the front, and more.

Embellish them, using some of the exquisite techniques that make these garments so breathtaking, from weaving and braiding to beading, painting, and embroidering. The highlight: six popular folkwear outfits with instructions on pattern making, marking, cutting out pieces, and putting it all together-a Seminole skirt, Moroccan burnoose, Syrian dress, Polish vest, Tibetan coat and Japanese Kimono.

The Folkwear Book of Ethnic Clothing : Easy Ways to Sew and Embellish Fabulous Garments from Around the World. The final section of the book offers patterns and detailed sewing instructions for garments: a kimono, a Polish vest, Tibetan panel coat, a Syrian dress and Moroccan burnoose-these will be familiar to owners of Folkwear's patterns. The book concludes with an excellent bibliography. Fiber artists, sewists, and costume makers will find plenty of useful material here. Very few books on ethnic costume provide information slanted toward duplicating and adapting techniques and garments-finally one that does!

Bring the world to your sewing machine! A sumptuously illustrated survey of traditional clothing from across the globe--plus timesaving, innovative techniques for making and decorating garments--will absolutely enchant stitchers. Throughout, images, from richly colored photographs to vintage postcards, capture people in their authentic dress (many of which have now disappeared). Before beginning an actual project, examine the basics of construction that appear again and again in ethnic attire: unconstructed rectangles, pullover cloaks or tunics, sleeved shifts, pull-on pants, full skirts with aprons, yoked shirts, short vests, and a front-opening coat. Embellish them, using some of the exquisite techniques that make these garments so breathtaking, from weaving and braiding to beading, painting, and embroidering. The highlight: six popular folkwear outfits with instructions on pattern making, marking, cutting out pieces, and putting it all together--a Seminole skirt, Moroccan burnoose, Syrian dress, Polish vest, Tibetan coat and Japanese Kimono.

Beautiful book, with excellent information on the patterns, and construction of the ethnic garments covered. However, when it comes to the section on Palestinian clothing, the author makes a glaring error, as well as a surprising omission, due to lack of research.

The author clearly never "cracked" a copy of any of the four major books on the topic of Palestinian clothing, all of which were published long before her book. She is totally ignorant of the design of the Bethlehem jacket. A garment discussed at length in all four books. The author says, of an old photo, that the woman is wearing a shawl, when she is actually wearling a short-sleeved, heavily couched, Bethlehem jacket.

The photo of the Palestinian dress is very good, although the mono-chromatic embroidery, on velvet is not the typical combination in Palestine. Far more common is multi-colored embroidery (cotton or silk), on cotton.

The omission is that no mention is made of the embroidery on the back of the dress, called the shinyar, nor is the back of the dress shown. Anyone who has read the books by Shelagh Weir, Y.K. Stillman, or Abed Al-Samih is aware that the designs on the backs of these dresses are of great importance.

When research material is readily available, it is always wise to consult it before embarking on a writing project.

I love the book, but I do not feel that is was exactly as described. The book was not in good condition. It was in okay condition. It was more worn or used than as described. In fact, the binding on this book was broken from the back cover. I kept the book, because of the content.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this book. When it arrived, I just had to stop everything I was doing to go through it.

The photography is beautiful. The items in this book stand for me as a suggestion as to what I can do to brighten up all my Folkwear Patterns, and what embellishments would look good, and what it will looks like, in the final outcome. Think of this as a preview of Folkwear Patterns and what COULD BE!

I think I expected more than what was here, but I really like this book and highly recommend it, even though I don't think there is enough of what they are displaying.

I'm not willing to "throw out" (so to speak) what is offered in this book. I just think more of the same, and on and on, would have been great.

I think that's where my talents, creativity and imagination come in.
It's up to me to bring the creativity and do the thinking and observation (it takes to make the final outcome of an garment I've made from a Folkwear pattern) to make it unique, and to make it WORK for me.

This book is, among other things, meant to INSPIRE and be a catalyst of forward motion in creativity, some research, and bring out the "dynamic" in a garment.

I recommend this book because of the form AND the content!!! HAPPY SEWING!

Fascinating book that weaves together various cultural and historical clothib customs. Answered questions I hadn't even thought to ask, like:
Why do many traditional cultures wear boxy or draped garments instead of more tailored, fitted ones?
Why are the seams, neck, sleeve cuffs, and hems traditionally embellished?
Why do some cultures incorporate small mirrors into their clothing?

There is a good balance between text, historical photos, and illustrations/diagrams in this book. Very informative while still being easy to read.

The Taunton Press is well-known for the production of the Folkwear line of patterns, and for over 25 years they have researched and produced the most amazing collection of clothing patterns from many countries and eras. But the heritage of these beautiful, practical garments lives on, and the more we are exposed to them, and inspired by them, the greater the opportunity for hand-made and locally relevant clothing styles to live on, and enrich us with their beauty.

This book is not intended to be an end-all tome on ethnic clothing. It is, however, a great starting place for those interested in ethnic clothing and embellishment. A little something to whet the appetite. It includes 5 schematic patterns for making your own garments. (The patterns are available through Folkwear for those not inclined to draft the patterns out themselves.) This is definitely a book that needs to be on every artistic sewist's shelf.
I bought this book used because it is out of print. The book was in like new condition. If you are interested in creating ethnic clothing or producing modern clothing based on ethnic techniques this is an excellent book that I can recommend wholeheartedly.
