This cannot be a verified purchase because my use of this cookbook predates Amazon, the internet, even personal computers. In 1970 I was impressing well-traveled friends with the Cuban Black Bean Soup recipe. Yes, the spine of the book is broken at this recipe as I've never found a better soup to replace it.

What is most impressive if the selection and editing of the recipes by Ms. Waldo. All the recipes are familiar enough to not challenge the palate of an ethnic-cooking novice, typical enough to give a sense of the flavor profile of the country represented, and made with ingredients available to most American cooks. The recipes include drinks, side dishes, stews, meats, desserts ... enough variety that the recipes within a larger region e.g. the Carribean are not repetitive.

I can still pick this cookbook up, browse awhile, and find something I want to try or remake. Not back for a 62 year old book.

This is a great cookbook! If you love to make foods from all over the world but don't want to spend a whole weekend on one entree, this is the book for you - Pan Am stewardesses, circa 1954, were asked to provide a small number of recipes for appetizers, entrees, vegetables, desserts and drinks, from the routes they flew, so there are foods from literally all over the world. Easy to make, even easier to eat - yum! Whenever I have company, this is the book I use to prepare meals, and no one has ever complained - plus they always ask for seconds. And don't miss the fabulous introduction, wherein the editor, Myra Waldo, warns her readers of 50 years ago that they will be running into strange ingredients in these recipes that they have rarely used before - things like garlic, onions and rice! Plus, the line drawing illustrations are absolutely charming. Buy this cookbook, you won't regret it!

Though I haven't cooked anything from the book yet, I marked dozens of interesting recipes in the book. They are unique without being weird, and they don't often have ingredients I won't be able to find in local grocery stores. Most didn't look time-consuming to make. I liked adding a cookbook to my collection that lists recipes by country and included a wide variety of countries around the world.
