I'm an old hand at keeping Briggs & Stratton engines going for years, but still a backyard mechanic. 1. Does not have the specific diagrams for the engine model I have (and that's why the official Briggs & Stratton repair manual is also needed). They complement each other well. 2. Diagrams in the Kindle version are sometimes too small to view clearly on my iPad (but better on a laptop).

No spark in your lawn mower or snowblower engine? Use this guide to test & troubleshoot ignition system problems . The ignition system is the starting system for your small engine

No spark in your lawn mower or snowblower engine? Use this guide to test & troubleshoot ignition system problems - including coil & switch replacement. The ignition system is the starting system for your small engine. Whether you start the engine with a pull rope or the turn of a key on an electric start motor, you're relying on the ignition system to produce a spark inside the combustion chamber. When you start your lawn mower or small engine, you turn the flywheel and its magnets pass the coil (or armature). This creates a spark.

This practical, step-by-step guide advises on how to repair Briggs and Stratton engines, which power a wide variety of lawn mowers, garden tools, go-karts, air compressors and other light utility units.

This practical, step-by-step guide advises on how to repair Briggs and Stratton engines, which power a wide variety of lawn mowers, garden tools, go-karts, air compressors and other light utility units. This edition has been updated to include current information on both new and old engines, as well as a new section on engine components and types. Since the second edition of this text was published in 1984, Briggs and Stratton has phased out conventional ignition systems and added two new engine lines. Both of these receive attention, as do phased-out models for those operating older machines. Other topics covered include information about torque specifications, running clearances, emissions control, and part numbers of redesigned and updated components that can be retrofitted to older engines.

To be frank, I bought this one because it was in a Kindle version, relatively inexpensive, and I was getting frustrated at not being able to diagnose a carburation-related running problem on my 2000 White lawn tractor. Meanwhile the grass was growing taller, and I was getting desperate. Also, I didn't want to shell out big bucks to replace the mower.

I'm an old hand at keeping Briggs & Stratton engines going for years, but still a backyard mechanic. I had read the prior reviews of this book, and the review that made the most sense was the one that recommended getting the specific Briggs & Stratton repair manual for a specific engine series (which I did not have), and getting this book also. They complement each other well.

Strengths:

1. Provides clear explanations of how various systems work, diagnostic procedures for determining what the specific problem is, and when you need special tools.
2. Illustrations are helpful to understand the explanations.
3. Warns of common mistakes to avoid (some I've made myself before) and their likely consequences.
4. Covers a wide range of engine history and when major changes were made.

Weaknesses:

1. Does not have the specific diagrams for the engine model I have (and that's why the official Briggs & Stratton repair manual is also needed).
2. Diagrams in the Kindle version are sometimes too small to view clearly on my iPad (but better on a laptop)

All in all, I found this book as a very useful small investment to help save money and buy the right parts to fix the problem. By the way, I got the mower running again, and am a happy camper. The specific Briggs & Stratton repair manual gave me the details I needed on my specific engine, but was short on explanations for understanding some of the basics and problem diagnosis. The B&S manual has less info on theoretical understanding and how-to, which I find to be strengths to Dempsey's book in the 4th edition.

I am definitely not a mechanic, nor am I very mechanically inclined. But this book led me to believe that if I followed its instructions, I would be able to repair and adjust the motor on my riding mower. This book is not for someone who has difficulty with mechanics. While it has a lots of diagrams, trying to compare my specific engine and carburetor to the diagrams was difficult at best. If I was a mechanic, this book is probably just what the doctor ordered, since I am not, I just got more frustrated and confused. In my opinion, this book is not for someone who doesn't have a good understanding of small engines.

Saved me a lot of time debugging, because I would've been clueless without it. More convenient and cheaper than dragging my lawnmower down to a repair shop for a mere ancillary component replacement.

I used it to determine that the automatic choke system's exhaust thermostatic actuator was faulty. Later, I used it to determine that the magneto armature had failed. So this manual is especially practical for relatively new machines, and owners who realize that their engine problem is not the engine proper, but one of the supporting components fastened to it.

Tip: After debugging your engine via the manual's instructions, find your specific part number at the B&S web site. If their web store isn't functioning properly, then call their service dept. in Ohio to order the part(s) that you already found on their web site.

This provides a LOT of information about Briggs and Stratton engines -- all of them -- and most were bigger than my little 4.5 push mower. I felt if I waded through the information, followed all the sidebars, and obtained a good grasp of small engine basics I MIGHT be able to infer the information I needed to make a very basic repair (cleaning the carburetor). Instead I ended up following a youtube video. I think this manual would be great for someone who repairs a lot of different Briggs and Stratton engines but if you're looking for a step-by-step How-To for a specific mower this is not for you. Also, the illustrations were not great if you're trying to look at it on your Kindle.

very weak info - OK for a person just beginning as a mech. No detail, mostly reprint and copied photos, very poor quality book

I learned quite a lot about engines from this book. The author does a great job explaining the different parts of the engine, what it does and how to repair them. Unlike most books that I have read about this it actually tells to take some jobs to a shop becuase it is too hard for an individual to do. A lot of bok I have read try to talk you through a ob that most people don't have the tools for. This one does not do that and I love that .

Not enough detail; opt for a shop manual. Doesn't show in good detail or explanation. How to set timing with slightly get and cam gear on ohv engine. Artist rendering on drawings instead of mail photographs with arrows.
THis is a great book to have if you are working on Briggs and Stratton Engines.
