This book is well written and informative, but the premise is the problem. There is no "American Tenant Law". Every state has vastly different laws in regards to renting. This book is more of a general advice rather than a guide to your rights. Most specific things will have you going online, which is probably where your search started anyway.

If you've never rented before, as a tenant or landlord, this book will be quite helpful. If you're looking for specific laws that apply to you, this book will be a list of URLs that you probably already looked at.

It's intensely detailed, so you need a lot of patience going through it. Plus, I discovered it pertains primarily to Federal laws, so you still have to go into further research for local laws. Nonetheless, I felt empowered after reading it, before researching local law, to write a powerful, informed letter asking for action from my landlord. They are currently taking some action to rectify my case. I do have 9 years of history living in this complex. I believe that carries power...

This book tells it all. I encourage all renters to purchase this book. I live in a complex right now where the manager is constantly harassing all tenants. We have one or two notes on our doors on a weekly basis harassing everyone about their pets, their vehicles, and decor in their apartments. This is supposed to be a pet friendly complex, but yet we get harassed and most the pet owners keep their pets quiet and pick up after them. The office is allowed to hang holiday decor, but the tenants cannot hang holiday decor in their apartments, the manager complains about where to park your vehicle when there is no assigned parking spots for tenants. This complex is full of bugs, leaking pipes, children urinating and defecating in the elevators and nothing is done about it. There are numerous other issues that certainly would keep a housing inspector busy although I hear rumors that inspectors get kickbacks just to keep these types of complexes open. Therefore, the tenants suffer.
There are some tenants that live together and are constantly fighting with loud screaming; throwing objects, yet the manager does nothing about it. These fighting people have had police called on them numerous times per month. The manager finds anything possible to charging fees to tenants by making up bogus excuses. The manager admitted to everyone in the complex newsletter she has people spying on all of us. That is considered stalking which it talks briefly about in this book. I have learned a great deal after purchasing this book. It just amazes me how much property management can get away with without tenants having little knowledge of what they (tenants) can do to protect themselves. Therefore, if you are a renter than please get this book. You never know, your landlord/manager may be pulling things that could be illegal, which I have discovered my property manager is doing. A lot of good legal advice written. One thing I really dislike is our manager gossips about tenants to other tenants and it is talked about in this book. I really think we have a right to our privacy, but there is no law that can protect us from being talked about by property managers. I think tenants should maybe start a petition to enact a law that landlords cannot talk about us to just anyone, especially your neighbors. That is definitely an invasion of our privacy.

This book came in very handy. My long time friend and I butted heads on a rental property she manages for her Daughter. After buying this and showing the legal side of things. The Daughter got the message loud and clear! This book is very precise and gives the exact direction to take including using USPS Priority Mail with the tracking number to STOP the attitude, harassment, broken promises, threats of retaliation and more. You don't need an attorney in most cases! The author is an Attorney.

This book gives you the knowledge to know some of your rights and it is crucial when your a renter. I also feel this book was an older addition it was not different at all from the newer addition. I purchased many products from amazon, the book arrived quickly and was in pristine condition. Apply the rules from the book, you'll be happy and won't regret it.

Very detailed book which can be used as a primary go to source whenever one is in need of knowledge about their standings as a tenant. I purchased this book for a family member that was renting and having problems with their rental company not fixing things in a timely fashion. This book was enough to give them the confidence they needed to address the problem with factual legalities instead of suppositions.
