What Really Causes Schizophrenia Paperback – July 6, 2006.

Using evidence from disciplines as diverse as history, geography, biochemistry and genetics, the author demonstrates that schizophrenia is caused by the hallucinogen adrenochrome and its derivatives. Effective treatment involves orthomolecular substances that reduce adrenochrome production or mitigate its impact.

There are so many schizophrenics under bridges and in prisons because conventional medicine treats this mental illness as a consequence of excess dopamine in the brain. Since there is no such excess, this treatment does not work. What Really Causes Alzheimer's Disease.

WHAT REALLY CAUSES AIDS: AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The AIDS pandemic is likely to become the greatest catastrophe in human history. Unless a safe, effective vaccine is quickly developed, or the preventive strategies outlined in this book are widely applied, by 2015 one sixth of the world's population will be infected by HIV-1 and some 250 million people will have died from AIDS.

WHAT REALLY CAUSES SCHIZOPHRENIA: AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY How difficult is the schizophrenia jigsaw? How complex is the puzzle? In The Madness of Adam and Eve, Horrobin1 points out that: While in familial and personality terms the problem is devastating, in biochemical terms the problem cannot be very serious.

I am not so naive as to believe that there is any hope of curing or preventing schizophrenia based on anything presented in this book, but I learned quite a bit of useful information about how diet affects brain chemistry. The first misleading statistic that stood out to me was that only 15% of schizophrenics are able to control their symptoms with medication. It would be important to also add information about the prevalence of misdiagnoses and the fact that some of the symptoms overlap with personality disorders, which are known to not respond to medication and require therapy. Also, there is a wide range and varying degrees of symptoms. Schizophrenics, who have the worst thinking problems, probably more often than not, respond quite well to psychiatric medication. It is important to also note that the results from the studies mostly include diagnosed people who may not be severely mentally ill. Everyone, however, could probably benefit from trying the nutrient and thyroid therapies if applicable, but to imply that is the key to solving all of their problems, I'm not so optimistic.

I gave this book five stars because I am convinced that the author is on the right track. I believe that it is especially important for people who have a genetic predisposition for developing autoimmune diseases and/or environmental sensitivities to avoid highly allergenic foods and foods that are rough on the digestive tract, especially gluten and dairy. Highly allergenic foods often disrupt the digestive tract, which leads to malabsorption of essential nutrients, which leads to deficiencies which affect brain chemistry and disrupts thinking. I also follow the similar explanation of how eating too much sugar affects blood sugar and adrenaline production. I will assume those explanations are based on solid science. However, the other little inaccuracy, that I noticed, was that celiac disease was explained as an allergy to gluten. Some people with celiac disease may be allergic to wheat, but the cause of celiac disease is an autoimmune response against certain body tissues, which is triggered by eating gluten. I have no doubt that other parts of the body may be affected by the disruption caused from eating biologically unfriendly foods, but it really bugged me that the author did not make that distinction. Nonetheless, I am a more enlightened person after reading this book. :)

Any parent with a schizophrenic child or anyone diagnosed with schizophrenia should read as many articles and books as possible. Look for the non-linear, non-mechanistic, non- mainstream approach. This is one of those books. A. Hoffer is another author to be read. Look for brain allergies, look for vitamin deficiencies (orthomolecular medicine or orthomolecular psychiatry ), heavy metal contamination, look for epilepsy as a cause of schizophrenia-like symptoms, and search for neurofeedback as on of the possible treatments. Do not conform.

I read this book about four years ago. I was exploring many different ideas regarding mental illness at the time and have continued my search. I even met Dr. Fostor at a meeting in Toronto and heard him speak. The book is quite entertaining and thought provoking. I would have to say though that based on what I have learned since reading this book, Dr. Foster's question, "What Really Causes Schizophrenia," is probably not totally well informed. There are in fact many things that are known to cause symptoms or behaviors that look like schizophrenia; ie, hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder and speech disorder are among many findings that people suffering with this problem can exhibit. The biological psychiatry movement in mainstream medicine is extremely strong and gaining momentum. The scientific evidence is accumulating rapidly. Schizophrenia-like behavior is evidence of brain dysfunction which can occur on many levels. I would suggest reading a number of good books like "Secondary Schizophrenia" by Sachdev or "The Spectrum of Psychotic Disorders" by Fujii et al, to appreciate the concept of many etiologies. Possibly Carl Pfieffer was actually right when he postulated years ago that eventually we would find a large number of medical disorders that are the underlying causes of "The Schizophrenias." His legacy is unfortunately the concepts of "histopenia and histodelia," which are two made up words referring to too little or too much histamine. Then there is Dr. Hoffer, quoted in the book by Dr. Foster, also of orthomolecular fame, who felt that schizophrenia was caused by adrenachrome. Maybe it is in a few cases but in the majority of cases there is another underlying disorder. I enjoyed reading this book four years ago at the stage of discovery which I was in at the time. In my opinion though this book does not provide the answer to the question which it asks.
