I used this book to build a 1/35th scale Centurion Tank for the 1967 war between Israel and her Arab Neighbors. The photos were a useful aid in building the tank as it appeared in this action. The vehicle's color, combat setting and overall physical appearance was a great aid in building this tank as it appeared at this time. This was what I wanted from this book.

The British really struggled to get a good tank fielded in WW2. The Centurion prototypes were rolled out in April 1945, just too late to see action. However, this tank was of sound design, was in active service from the 40's through the 80's in one form or another. For such a short book, this is very comprehensive coverage. All variants are reviewed here, including the Engineering and special armor types. It may surprise some, but the Centurion fought in Korea, Vietnam (Australians used them) and the Israelis used them to great success. This book was published in 1976, so the conversions to Armored Personnel Carrier are not shown here, but this does not detract from the book.

This book follows the In Action series format, 48 pages of narrative, B&W photos supplemented with line drawings to show the difference between each version. There are two pages to show color schemes and also very helpful, 2 charts that capture all of the technical specifications of each model. The photos are crisp, clear with helpful captions showing the tank from every angle and under all conditions.

This is a great book for modelers, fans of British armor, those who want to see what one of the best western tank in the 1950's was. This is also a great supplement to Bill Munro's The Centurion Tank, a more definitive work on the subject. For the price, this Squadron Signal book is the best and I would recommend this over the New Vanguard series version.
