Willeford wrote quirky books about quirky characters, and seems to have done so with a magnificent disregard for what anyone else thought. In Erickson's description, "The camera's not really focused on the middle of the scene. Willeford would later mistakenly recall that Until I Am Dead was the original title for Wild Wives. Bound with his earlier novel, High Priest, which is blessed with another turgid blurb: "No woman could resist his strange cult of lechery!" High Priest of California/Wild Wives.

Packed with atmosphere and humor, New Hope for the Dead is a classic murder mystery by one of the true masters of the genre. Now back in print, Charles Willeford’s tour de force is an irresistible invitation to become acquainted with one of the greatest detective characters of all time. Charles Willeford should never have deviated from his tried-and-true formula of alternating chapters between a hilariously evil criminal and hilariously crusty cop Hoke Moseley. That formula made solid gold out of both Miami Blues and Sideswipe, a magic which is missing here.

I loved the other two Charles Willeford books I've read, but I could not finish this one. I gave up with less than 80. I gave up with less than 80 pages to go. There simply isn't a plot. All of those are on display for New Hope for the Dead, a book I enjoyed but didn’t like as much as I wanted to. This is less of a conventional mystery or crime story and more of an exploration into Hoke Moseley’s life. As we know from the first book, it’s not a good one.

The Hoke Moseley series is good stuff. This one, like the other two in the series, is entertaining, lively reading. The character makes the book, but the author makes Hoke. Highly recommend all three novels.

The main character, Hoke Moseley, is a man after my own heart. He just wants to simplify his life--that's why he has two jump suits that he rotates in use. However, nothing is ever simple, and Willeford knows the anything-but-simple life. Given the task of solving cold cases (hence New Hope for the Dead), Hoke goes about it in the context of his life. The story is NOT about solving cases. It's all about Hoke coping in this dark but refreshing novel. Hoke is not Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marples or Nero Wolfe--he just happens to be a cop with problems that have little to do with his work or solving the cold cases. If you like your reading with rich characters, you'll not be able to put this down.

Charles Willeford is a GREAT WRITER and this book is part of one of his greatest writing series. it's as much film noir as it is detective writing. If you are a fan of Ellmore Leonard you've got to read Willeford. Leonard was a big fan of his.

It is a shame the author only wrote four novel in the series.

The Hoke Moseley novels bring a gritty, yet human, realism to the US "hard-boiled" detective genre. Charles Willeford is a master of intricate detail, engaging storyline, rounded characters, and all set against a background of wit and tension. Perfect.

This is a really memorable read. Characters are great, plot is pretty good and the feel you get for what is happening as it is happening is incredible.
