Book came on time. Front cover was damaged.
Given as gift and throughly enjoyed.
Mature and exceptionally well thought-out, this is by far the best book on architecture that I have ever come across.

It covers the field with a synthetic historical approach topic by topic: overall evolution, building materials, underground structures, walls, entranceways, roofs, floors, etc. This is interspersed with short analyses of well known and not so well known significant buildings such as the Giza pyramids, the Breslau Dome, the Chartres Cathedral and Fontainebleau Castle.

Very up to date, the book includes current environmental considerations. It steers clear, however, of judgements on what some may consider errors of the past, such as 19th century eclecticism or 20th century modernism.

The writing style is clear, direct and concise. The illustrations in general and the photographs in particular are astounding: at once artistic and highly evocative. The contemporary layout avoids unnecessarily multiplying sidebars and produces a book that is easy and fun to read.

Though already quite hefty, this delightful encyclopaedic book on architecture can only be criticized as being too cursory in covering certain subjects.

It is unfortunate that a sixth star cannot be added to this appreciation!
I just borrowed this book from the public library, and I look forward to buying it when I have a chance. It's different than all the other large format(coffee table) book on architecture I've ever seen, in that it breaks architecture down into its common components -- roofs, walls, steps, entranceways, ornamentation, etc. It then provides excellent examples and illustrations of each of these, along with a lot of in-depth information about construction materials and techniques. The numerous photographs are beautiful, and many of the examples chosen illustrate important buildings including numerous gems of world architecture.
