If you ever wanted to know what it's like to be selected to attend a Zen Buddhist monastery, this is probably the first, and perhaps only, book you'll want to read. It basically follows the process.

I wanted to know what's involved in living this lifestyle. After reading the book, I'm not so sure I would be cut out for it.

It's a tough, isolated, and demanding life suited for for one out of a million who are truly interested in the path to enlightenment as a monk. Very well written and thorough account of the selection and training of a Zen monk.
